Pictured is the label on a Greiner doll. The maker of these dolls, Ludwig Greiner, was an immigrant from Germany who settled in Philadelphia in the 1830s. He was listed as a “Toy Man” in an 1840 Philadelphia directory. His patent was one of the earliest doll patents. The early paper labels glued to the doll heads read "GREINER’S IMPROVED PATENT HEADS Pat. March 30th ‘58". His patent called for cloth to reinforce the paper mache. The paper mache recipe was one pound of white paper cooked and beaten, then add one pound each of dry Spanish whiting and rye flour, then add one ounce of glue. The original patent was extended in 1872. After his death in 1874 his sons carried on the business until 1884. Dolls ranged in size from 13 to 36 inches in height.

Dear Doll Friends,

A few days ago we received a message from an Australian viewer, Jennifer, who upon visiting our Carmel Doll Shop Boutique website, was disappointed that various ensemble kits that we had offered in the past were no longer visible. Our theory concerning sold items, is that if they are no longer available for purchase, they should not be given “shelf space.” But our dedicated Australian seamstress had a different point of view - and one that we could understand. She explained that she just liked to look at the pictures of the ensembles. Jennifer thought that with the help of the photos, she could utilize the designs to make something on her own. Who are we to argue?

With that idea in mind, we have created a page on our Boutique site entitled “INSPIRATION” where you can see photos of ensemble kits that we have previously handled, and /or produced. We hope you find this resource useful: https://www.carmeldollshopboutique.com/inspiration

On another note, we are currently building a super-duper update for the Carmel Doll Shop Boutique. We have dolls, ensemble kits, luscious new silks, accessories, and a new instructional sewing video with Angela D, all getting finishing touches, so please stay tuned.

But in the meantime, we are pleased to announce that we have just replenished the Boutique with a limited number of "Cape du Soir" Kits from Denise Buese. The sumptuous black velvet Opera Capes are to accompany the lovely pink and black check silk Dress Kit entitled "Palais Garnier.” Please do not hesitate, as quantities of both the cape and dress kits are very limited.

Thank you all so much for your continued support of the Boutique. Please remember that we are here for your needs, and we will always do our best to address them…just ask Jennifer in Australia.

Anyone else missing their May issue? Still have not received mine and getting kind of worried.☹
Does anyone know of a Cincinnati/Dayton, OH area resource that sells archival doll boxes and acid free tissue? I can order from New York state with a shipping fee of $23! Also looking for a local doll expert to help id my mom's antique doll. Thanks for any help! Tres Lynn
We dug these dolls up in our yard. Can anyone identify them?
Hi Does anyone know what these are? Wooden shoes...clothes stitched closed and cloth bodied in a unique post box
Here is a photo of the doll I purchased at a flea market. The back is marked Effanbee, but the head is unmarked. Her arms and legs were hanging loose and her hair was a mess when I bought her. She has some crazing, but I love her and have her in my glass case. Is she the 1928 Mary Jane? I'll put two more photos in comments.
