This is a bit long but worth reading. A good reminder to check in with friends, neighbors and especially your kids during these unusual times in the country.

It’s the morning after a very dark day in DC… and we’re all still processing what happened here yesterday.
I did my job yesterday, just like everyone else who lives and works here.
But this morning, when I heard a jet flying overhead … I felt a wave of anxiety that caught me off guard.
Remember after the terrorists attacked on 9/11 … the sound of the fighter jets as we waited for all of the planes still in the air to land? I remember lying awake at night, for weeks afterward, listening to those fighter jets overhead… worrying about whether my family would be safe and about what could happen next.
I was indoors and couldn’t see the source of the noise I heard this morning … but that single sound took me directly to a fearful place and a lot of feelings I subdued while I was covering the invasion of the Capitol yesterday.

I know that unexpected things can be triggers – a sound, an image, a smell or anything, really … and we must not underestimate the mental health impact of what we all watched and experienced yesterday. It was horrifying. And instigated by our President, whose silence was truly shocking. We all need someone to talk to right now, to help us work through our feelings and find reasons to feel hopeful. But there are lots of obstacles in the way of that right now… we’re working from home, or isolating to protect ourselves from a deadly virus and the normal opportunities to talk with our friends and hug our loved ones are gone.
What’s more – that isolation has already created a huge demand for mental health help… and even that is more difficult to arrange and afford during this pandemic. For people who are already struggling with mental illness, or addiction – yesterday was even more difficult.

So – please reach out for help and comfort right now. Share your feelings, don’t try to shut them down. And please, check in with family and friends and neighbors who might need someone to talk with. And please take extra time to talk with your children about what happened. It’s especially important to listen to their concerns and reassure them that they are safe.

There are LOTS of mental health resources who are ready to help, by phone or text, 24 hours a day. Don’t hesitate to contact them! Your mental health is important.
