The Promise: A Docuseries on Childhood Cancer

Today, we begin meeting the grandparents of two children who are taking the childhood cancer world by storm. You do not want to mess with these two!

First, we have Joe Baber - 74 year old retired retail executive, father to five, grandfather of 4. Conor, my second grandchild is a 13 year survivor of neuroblastoma. He is the “Why” I am a childhood cancer advocate and active in this community. I grieve with my advocate friends for the children they have lost and I pray for those children and families who are in the fight. While I never want to give people any kind of false hope, I do feel we all need to have some hope to be able do what is needed. I want to do my part so that no other family has to endure the loss that I feared my family would see. My hope is to see childhood cancer join polio as a disease that “was.”

💛 Emily Belcher is a childhood cancer advocate and cancer mom - her daughter Caroline was diagnosed with PNET brain cancer at age 3. Emily has volunteered and worked in the childhood cancer community in an effort to raise national awareness and bring the community together. She is also a member of the AFLAC Childhood Cancer Campaign Advisory Council.

🌎 Emily is focused on continuing the national conversation about how to improve pediatric cancer treatments and raising awareness about the side effects that survivors face for the rest of their lives.

❕ Meet the Tomoff Family - Ryan, Terri and Bill. They are spreading awareness through their post-traumatic growth.

💪 Ryan Tomoff is a current 5 time cancer survivor at "only" 25 years old. He was originally diagnosed at Georgetown University Hospital with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia with CNS (Central Nervous System) involvement at two years of age (10/17/1996). He received cranial/spinal radiation along with that diagnoses but was still considered a part of the “standard treatment” of Leukemia at that time. He enjoyed a few months being cancer free until he relapsed with the same Leukemia on 9/2/2000. He still tried to live each day the best he could with little, or virtually, no complaint. And then, in May 2004, he relapsed once again.

🔬 Ryan’s life-saving PBMT happened on 11/3/2004. Ryan recovered fully in about two years post transplant. He enjoyed life and graduated from high school and began studying at our local community college. Then in May 2016, Ryan received the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma on his tongue at the University of Maryland. Ryan had three surgeries in a few months time. It took over a year for full healing and recovery, but again, Ryan carried on with no complaint.

🙌 Today, Ryan works part-time at InstallNET International, an office-furniture project management company as an Administrative Assistant, and is heavily involved with Special Love, Inc., The Just Tryan It Foundation and Hope for Henry. He is considered a YAC-er (or Young Adult with Cancer) and serves on panel and boards in the Washington DC Metro area.

Theresa Beech is the mother of two kids, Daniel and Sara. When Daniel was 11, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an extremely aggressive and deadly form of bone cancer. Two years later he was dead. While Daniel was on hospice, Theresa taught herself genomics and started doing research into osteosarcoma genetics. She was able to identify two drugs which corresponded to mutations in Daniel’s tumor and prolonged his life. Since Daniel’s death on August 28, 2016, she has continued her patient advocacy and genomics research and is the Principal Investigator of POWR, the Patient/parent Osteosarcoma genome-Wide Registry. She has presented her research findings at numerous scientific conferences in the US and internationally, and has been invited to speak at a variety of forums. ⚽️ MEET JOY VEAZEY, sister to Hope.

🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️HOPE FASTER is an all-volunteer sports and fitness focused pediatric cancer fundraising and awareness platform. Created in 2013 by the sibling of a young cancer patient, HOPE FASTER encourages activity to help young cancer patients stay active and to help all children learn the lessons that sports and competition provide.

HOPE FASTER grew from an idea Joy Veazey had to help her little sister Hope when she was diagnosed with Leukemia. Joy designed a fitness and fundraising event around a speed & agility workout that is professionally coached but run by children and young adults.

This Kids-Helping-Kids event introduces children to a cause and provides a fundraising platform to support their peers facing cancer. They learn to advocate for others leading up to the event then focus on the lessons of hard work and competition, all of which will help them in life and any athletic endeavors.
