Memories of a Dreamer: The Journal of a Political Prisoner (Memorias de un soñador la historia de un prisionero politico) (2008) 51 mins – is a firsthand account of the hardship suffered by a political prisoner of Chile's cruel 1973 and inhumane dictatorship. More than 30 years after, Félix Mora relives the shocking details of the human rights abuses he suffered, his escape from the dictatorship, and the challenges he faced as an exile in Italy and Canada. Félix's heartbreaking memories are shared with Jorge Aro, another political prisoner and friend of Félix, who was also held in the Stadium at the horrifyingly tender age of 15. Together, they share chilling details of their incarceration, re-visiting the "snail shell", where the most gruesome tortures took place. Exile was meant to silence those who fought the regime. For Félix, exile became a catalyst to fight for freedom and democracy.
"Silent River" - The Santiago River, known locally as "the River of Death," flows along the outskirts of Guadalajara, Mexico. For forty years, waste from one of Mexico’s largest manufacturing corridors has been dumped into the Santiago. 80% of the companies in the corridor – brands like IBM, HP, Coca-Cola, Levi’s, Honda and Nestlé – are American and Japanese. The river has been transformed into a sewer with over 1000 known chemicals, including dangerously high levels of arsenic, chrome, and lead. Silent River follows a young woman and her family as they defy death threats to try and save the one of the most polluted rivers in Mexico.
Surire documents the disparate elements that form a natural and social landscape in northern Chile’s isolated Surire Salt Flat, near the border with Bolivia. A Chilean Natural Monument, the salt flat and several small salt lakes make up a protected area that is home to a number of Andean species of plants and wildlife, including the suri, a large flightless bird from which the desert gets its name. A small number of Aymara elders live in this part of the desert, not far from trucks and machines that mine borax from an important deposit.
Women of the Mine Portraits of three women who live and work in the infamous mines of El Cerro Rico in Bolivia. Work inside the mines has been limited to men, while the women are forced to work outside searching for mineral scraps on the side of the mountain. The film highlights the women’s strength, determination and resilience in the face of struggle and hardship. Domitila Chungara – World famous labor leader and feminist, Domitila led the struggle of miners and women in Bolivia. Lucía Armijo – worker, miner, leader and single mother of six children, Lucia shows us the mines and tells us about her life in the Cerro Rico. Francisca Gonzalez – Miner and the granddaughter, daughter and widow of miners, Francisca supports her family by hammering stone by stone in her struggle to change the future of her grandchildren. Eduardo Galeano - the acclaimed Uruguayan writer adds more insight as he explains in his eminent poetic style the daily life that these women face.
