Former Bengals Pro Bowl wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh believes Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski put rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders in a no-win situation during Saturday’s preseason finale against the Rams.

Houshmandzadeh questioned why veteran Joe Flacco started the game, arguing that the team already knows what Flacco brings to the table. Instead, he said the reps should have been split between Sanders and Dillon Gabriel to determine who deserves the backup role.

“From my assessment…they don’t want a controversy,” Houshmandzadeh said on Nightcap. “We know what Flacco can do. If you’re trying to figure out who’s going to play if Flacco gets hurt, you let Gabriel and Shedeur split the game. Snoop [Huntley] is getting cut. That’s the real battle.”

He added that Sanders was set up to fail by being surrounded with players unlikely to make the roster.

“To me it was like wow—you put him in with guys that are going to be on the street,” Houshmandzadeh said. “Everybody Shedeur played with, they’re getting cut. You didn’t give him a fair chance to compete. He went into a gunfight with two knives. You’re going to lose that every time.”

Sanders completed 3 of 6 passes for 14 yards and was sacked five times in the loss.
