WEDNESDAY UPDATE: Another 34 pelicans were rescued yesterday and brought to SBWCN. This brings the total number of rescued pelicans since Saturday morning to 92. We are transferring many of these birds to other wildlife rehabilitation centers to help lighten the load. Our team is working hard to respond to all of your calls and rescue as many of these birds as we can.
The cause of this widespread condition is still being confirmed, but here are some ways you can help:
1. VOLUNTEER. We need extra hands to help us clean enclosures, wash dishes, and help around the hospital. Even if you can only volunteer a couple hours, we can use your help. Please email [email protected] with the subject line "Pelican Help."
2. DONATE. Financial donations are vital to continue purchasing medication, fluids, fish, crates, and medical supplies, as well as cover the costs of extra staffing and transportation: www.sbwcn.org/donate
3. CALL THE HELPLINE. If you see a pelican that appears lethargic, disoriented, or is in an unusual location, please call us and leave a detailed message with the location of the bird: 805-681-1080
A huge thank you to our staff, volunteers, partners, and the entire community for helping these pelicans during this crisis.

May 15-21 is #NationalPoliceWeek, that time of year when Americans pause to say a collective thank you to the men and women who wear or carry the badge.
Sheriff Brown shared “Sometimes law enforcement service manifests itself in heroic acts of armed criminal intervention or difficult rescues from perilous situations. At other times lives are positively changed, enriched or saved through the sustained and dedicated efforts of law enforcement personnel. Whatever the time or situation, the men and women of American law enforcement stand ready to protect and serve others. No matter what your assignment or duty, you make a difference in the lives of others each and every day.”
He added “Friday is also Law Enforcement Memorial Day, when we pause to remember those who have laid down their lives in the service of others. That happened on the night of July 23, 1925, when Jailer George Downing was killed in the line of duty in an on-duty traffic accident. George Washington Downing is the only member of the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office known to have lost their life in the line of duty. We honor his memory during National Police Week.”

May is officially Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month in the City of Goleta. Mayor Perotte presented a Proclamation to long-time Goleta resident Michael Cheng at the May 17 Goleta City Council meeting.
The history and cultures of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders are inextricably tied to the story of the United States of America and California is one of the states with the largest Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders population.
The City of Goleta issued the Proclamation in acknowledgment of the historical and cultural contributions of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders in the development of the State of California and to show the City’s commitment to being a welcome and inclusive place for all.
The City is pleased for the opportunity to officially recognize and celebrate the many significant cultural, historical, and economic contributions Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders have made to Goleta.

Currently blooming in the Garden:
Coulter’s Matilija Poppy (Romneya coulteri)
This beautiful plant bears the largest flowers of any species native to California, rivaled only by Hibiscus lasiocarpos.
It is native to southern and Baja California, where it grows in dry canyons in chaparral and coastal sage scrub plant communities, sometimes in areas recently burned.
We love seeing this plant bloom in our meadow. Stop by and see it for yourself.
Happy weekend! 🌞🌱
Congratulations!!!

Gene and Leslee are working diligently to complete the renovation while continuing to serve the large list of regulars who can be seen having their morning coffee or picking up their lunch on a regular basis.
