William McChord Hurt (March 20, 1950 – March 13, 2022) was an American #actor. He studied at The Julliard School and began acting on #stage in the 1970s. Hurt made his #film debut in 1980 as a troubled scientist in the Ken Russell #sciencefiction feature #AlteredStates for which he received a #GoldenGlobe nomination for New #Star of the Year. In 1981 he played a leading role, as a lawyer who succumbs to the temptations of a married woman played by Kathleen Turner, in the Neo Noir film #BodyHeat.

Hurt garnered three consecutive nominations for the #AcademyAward for #BestActor for #KissoftheSpiderWoman (1985), #ChildrenofaLesserGod (1986), and #BroadcastNews (1987), winning for the first of these.

Hurt remained an active stage actor throughout the 1980s, appearing in Off Broadway productions including Henry V, Fifth of July, Richard II and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Hurt received his first #TonyAward nomination in 1985 for the #Broadway production of Hurlyburly.

After a variety of character roles in the following decade, Hurt earned his fourth Academy Award nomination for his supporting performance in the #DavidCronenberg crime #thriller #AHistoryofViolence (2005). His later career film roles include turns in #A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001), #TheVillage (2004), #Syriana (2005), #TheGoodShepherd (2006), Mr. Brooks (2007), #IntotheWild (2007), #RobinHood (2010), and the #Marvel Cinematic Universe films, in which he portrayed Thaddeus Ross.

I have lived many places in this country, as well as in a few others. I was born in London, and spent some other early years in the eastern US. But Boulder is where I grew up, where I went to high school, where I learned to enjoy the world in which we live and to feel gratitude for its beauty, its bounty, its infinite possibilities, as limitless as the blue skies. And of all the places I have dwelled, there was always an ideal, a sense of peace and welcoming, which was pervasive in every inhabitant, student, and visitor. With violence and malice, that was broken today, and my heart hurts for Boulder, and I and so many friends and fellow beings weep for those who were taken in the abhorrent act, including the life of a peace officer. Boulder will heal, and heal through its ideals, which resonate so deeply within those who love this town, this valley, and its people. WIRES has been rescuing and caring for wildlife for over 30 years and is the largest wildlife rescue organisation in Australia. We are passionate about supporting smaller volunteer organisations in the wildlife sector that are working towards the same goals as well as Universities, Veterinary associations and other environmental groups.

In the last 5 years we have been working closely with WWF-Australia, National Parks Association, Humane Society International Australia, The Wilderness Society, Animal Welfare League, NatureConservation Council, BirdLife Australia, ifaw and RSPCA NSW. We take this opportunity to thank these organisations for their significant contribution to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Sector.

While WIRES presence is mostly in NSW where we are responding to more than 90,000 rescues each year, we also receive around 170,000 calls to our 1300 WIRES line annually, including thousands of interstate calls where we provide rescue advice.

WIRES also plays a major role in national community wildlife education. Normally WIRES has several hundred thousand unique visitors to our website annually but we have had over a million unique visitors in the last couple of days.

Following these catastrophic fires WIRES is also very keen to pursue additional opportunities to help wildlife more broadly across Australia wherever possible, including partnering on projects to improve long-term outcomes for native animals.

We will be announcing in the coming days our support for new projects to assist bushfire affected animals in all regions.

Requiescat in Pacem: JOHN SINGLETON (January 6, 1968 – April 29, 2019), an American film director, screenwriter, and producer best known for directing Boyz n the Hood (1991). For the film, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director, becoming the first African American and youngest person to have ever been nominated for the award at age 24. Singleton was a native of South Los Angeles and many of his early films, such as Poetic Justice (1993), Higher Learning (1995), and Baby Boy (2001), consider the implications of inner-city violence. Some of his other films include dramas such as Rosewood (1997) in addition to action films such as Shaft (2000), 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), and Four Brothers (2005). He recently co-created the crime drama Snowfall.
