After a week-long itinerary of community events and preceding celebrations, Jared R. Tice, Ed.D,. was officially inaugurated as the university’s 18th president.

Although he has officially served in a presidential capacity since Aug. 1, the investiture is more of a formal ceremony rather than an official start to Tice’s presidency.

As graduation day approaches, seniors at the university are reflecting on their college experiences, the lessons they learned and their plans for life after college.

Business, biology, and communications majors alike share a common thread: appreciation for the university’s close community and the personal growth they gained here.

As a student-run organization, the Chimes is reshaped by a new staff every year. No two years are the same, and each group brings its own priorities and perspectives. Still, a shared philosophy connects the paper’s generations of student journalists. That philosophy can be understood through three elements: purpose, policy and product.

Purpose

The Chimes has had a clear sense of purpose since its founding in 1926. The paper was created in response to calls to improve “the Spectator,” the university’s old literary journal and news combination, which took several weeks to print, meaning the news section was often out of date.

Typically, when people think of football, they rarely think of kickers. Many instead think of positions like quarterback, wide receiver and running back; however, on Sept. 11, 2021, this was not the case.

That day, everyone was paying attention to the kicker, Caden Cox — who was born with down syndrome. During the game, Caden had become the first player with Down syndrome to play and to score in a game, at least in known history.

Annually, the university holds the Sound and Media Workshop. Designed to offer both students and prospective students beneficial experience from professionals, it has grown into something larger: a community of art.

The workshop, which is in its 14th year, has been organized by music technology professor Chad Loughrige since its inception. The workshop was originally designed to be a recruitment workshop for music tech students, but has since grown to include film and media production and journalism students.

Last weekend, the 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament kicked off. Out of the 64 teams who made the cut, here are a few teams who are eyeing to end their national championship drought.

Michigan State Spartans

Led by legendary coach Tom Izzo, the Spartans will play UConn in the Sweet 16. Izzo has led the Spartans to the Final Four eight times in his tenure, with the last being a loss to Texas Tech in 2019. Michigan State has not won a national title since 2000 but look to do so this year.

Earlier this month, former president of The Ohio State University Walter “Ted” Carter resigned because of a self-admitted “inappropriate relationship.” Despite their stated core values of creating an “ethical culture,” they continuously work against those institutional duties.

Carter, who had been in the position at Ohio State since the start of 2024, admitted to giving podcaster Kristanthe Vlachos access to public resources to support her business. The nature of the “inappropriate relationship” is still unknown.

On the first night of the Chimes’s trip to New York City for the 2026 College Media Association Spring Convention, six Chimes reporters watched indie rock powerhouse Mitski sing to a crowd of limbs with smartphones welded to them.

That concert was the third night of Mitski’s six-night concert engagement at NYC visual arts center The Shed as she supported her eighth studio album “Nothing’s About to Happen to Me.”
