Following a sometimes heated and tense debate, the Biddeford City Council voted 6-3 Tuesday to indefinitely table a proposed ordinance that would address skyrocketing lot fees at one of the city's manufactured housing parks.
Moments after the vote, several residents of the Granite Village development-- clearly angry -- filed out of the council chamber.
"They are killing us," said one longtime resident about the development's relatively new owner, Phillips Intl., a Great Neck, New York-based company.
One resident said the city "simply doesn't care" that they are being "forced from their homes."
Residents say their lot fees have increased 75 percent over the last three years.
The proposed ordinance would have provided limits on annual lot increases.
Councilor Jake Pierson led the tabling charge, pointing out that the state of Maine is currently working on a similar piece of legislation.
Pierson described Biddeford's proposed ordinance as redundant, saying the city is already facing a myriad of challenging issues.
