Weather Update: Stormy Week Ahead, Followed by Intense Heat Next Weekend

Issued: Sunday morning, June 21, 2026

We are caught in the middle of two big weather systems right now: a massive heat dome to our southwest and a stormy system to our east.

This setup is going to trigger a few rounds of storms during the work week, followed by a major shift toward intense heat by next weekend.

Here is the day-by-day breakdown of what to expect:

☀️ Today (Sunday)

Morning: Watch out for patchy, dense fog during your early morning drive. It should burn off shortly after sunrise.

Afternoon: Once the fog clears, it will turn hot and humid. Expect scattered, disorganized afternoon showers and storms driven by the daytime heat.

⛈️ Monday through Friday

The Storm Threat: We are looking at a daily risk of showers and thunderstorms. While we aren’t expecting a massive, widespread severe weather outbreak, local conditions could still cause some trouble.

Flooding Risk: Because the winds aloft are light, some storms might "train"—meaning they pass over the exact same neighborhoods over and over like train cars. If you are in a low-lying or poorly drained area, keep an eye out for quick localized flash flooding.

Winds: The strongest storms during the peak afternoon heat could bring some gusty, damaging winds.

🌡️ The Heat is Coming

Monday: It’s going to be very hot and muggy during the day before the evening storms roll through.

Mid-Week: The humidity and heat will linger, especially for southern areas.

Next Weekend (Dangerous Heat): A major weather shift happens by the weekend. The heat dome expands directly over us, combining intense temperatures with high humidity. This will likely push heat index values (what it actually feels like) into dangerous territory.

What you should do:

No need to panic, but don't completely let your guard down either. Since summer storms can change quickly based on local boundaries, just keep an eye on the sky and check back for daily updates before heading out this week! 🌧️👇

🌊 SOUTH MISSISSIPPI RIVER FLOOD UPDATE
📅 Sunday, June 21, 2026

Following the widespread 5 to 8 inches of rainfall that fell early last week, combined with additional moisture and runoff from Post-Tropical Cyclone Arthur, river basins across South Mississippi continue to experience significant flooding impacts.

While many of the smaller creeks and tributaries have begun to stabilize or slowly recede, the larger river systems are still transporting an enormous volume of water toward the Gulf Coast. As a result, flooding concerns remain ongoing in several areas despite the end of the heavy rainfall event.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📍 PEARL RIVER & HANCOCK COUNTIES
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

The western portion of the region continues to experience the slow-moving effects of runoff moving through the Pearl River Basin.

🔹 Pearl River near Picayune
• Major flooding remains ongoing.
• Low-lying areas continue to be inundated.
• Floodwaters have extended into portions of the Westchester Subdivision.
• Structures along MS Highway 43 remain threatened.
• North Beech Road and Palestine Road remain impassable due to high water.

🔹 West Hobolochitto Creek near McNeill
• Rose well above flood stage last week and reached moderate flood levels.
• Water levels have begun a gradual decline.
• Drainage remains slow due to saturated soils and elevated downstream water levels.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
📍 HARRISON & STONE COUNTIES
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

River systems across Harrison and Stone Counties experienced some of the most dramatic rises of this event, with several waterways approaching historic flood levels.

🔹 Biloxi River near Lyman
• Major flooding remains in progress.
• Crested near 20.1 feet on Friday.
• Just below the all-time record crest of 20.95 feet set in May 1995.
• Flood warnings remain in effect as water levels slowly recede.

Areas experiencing significant impacts include:

• Biloxi River Estates
• Retreat Village / Riverland Village
• Oakridge Manor
• Rolling Acres

Additional roadway impacts:

• Loraine Road near the Biloxi River Bridge
• Lamey Bridge Road

Forecast:
• The river is expected to gradually fall below flood stage within the next 24 to 36 hours.

🔹 Wolf River near Gulfport
• Reached major flood stage.
• Crested near historical flood benchmarks comparable to the June 2001 flood event.
• Significant backwater flooding continues across low-lying areas near Landon and northern Gulfport.
• Water levels will be slow to recede as runoff continues draining toward the Bay of St. Louis.

🔹 Tchoutacabouffa River near D’Iberville
• Rose rapidly following Arthur’s heavy rainfall.
• Continues to steadily decline.
• Showing the fastest recovery among the major Harrison County river systems.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🌊 THE BOTTOM LINE
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

✅ The heavy rainfall has ended.

⚠️ However, the flood threat is not over.

• Large volumes of water continue moving through the Biloxi, Wolf, and Pearl River basins.
• Flood-prone communities and low-lying roadways may remain impacted through the remainder of the weekend and into early next week.
• Slow drainage and prolonged high water will be the primary concern over the next several days.

Please continue to avoid flooded roadways and never drive around barricades. Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
