Manfred Pollak was born in Germany in 1929. By 1938, he was attending the Jewish Public School in Munich, wearing the yellow Star of David stitched to every piece of clothing — a badge of persecution in a world that had turned against him.

He lived without his parents, for reasons lost to time, in a Jewish orphanage — a Kinderheim — among other children who shared his loneliness and fear. There, he became close friends with Hugo Holzmann, a fellow student who would survive the war. It is through Hugo's donation of two surviving photographs that we remember Manfred’s face today.

In March 1943, Manfred was loaded into a cattle car with 70 others, crammed into darkness, bound for Auschwitz. At only 14 years old, he was torn from the only community he had ever known — and within hours of arrival, he was murdered in the gas chambers.

He left behind no last letter, no grave. Only a photograph. Only memory.
