In 1979, Chicago became the backdrop for one of cinema’s most unforgettable stunts when a green Pontiac LeMans roared off the 17th floor of Marina City’s parking garage and plunged into the Chicago River. The moment, captured without the aid of CGI or modern trickery, was pure adrenaline — a throwback to an era when movie magic was achieved with daring precision and a willingness to take real risks. Crowds gathered to witness the spectacle, their cheers echoing across the city as the car hurtled toward its watery fate.

The stunt was meticulously planned and executed by legendary stuntman Bud Ekins, a longtime friend and collaborator of Steve McQueen. Ekins, who had already cemented his reputation with iconic motorcycle and car scenes in *The Great Escape* and *Bullitt*, orchestrated the leap with exacting detail. Timing, trajectory, and speed had to be perfect — one miscalculation could have been catastrophic. Watching the Pontiac smash through the wooden barrier and sail into open air was not only thrilling but a testament to the craft of practical stunt work.

Though *The Hunter* — McQueen’s final film before his death in 1980 — received mixed reviews, this scene became its lasting legacy. It embodied everything McQueen loved about filmmaking: authenticity, danger, and the raw beauty of real action over artificial effects. The Marina City leap remains etched in movie history, a fearless, high-octane farewell from the King of Cool, who always preferred the roar of an engine to the safety of a soundstage.
