Just north of Montgomery AL are remains of the “Big Fish” movie set, located just off Cypress Lane in Millbrook AL. For those unfamiliar with the 2003 film, it is a fantasy comedy-drama directed by Tim Burton. It stars Albert Finney as Edward Bloom, a man who enjoys reshaping his personal history with entertaining tall tales. Ewan McGregor co-stars as the younger version of Edward.

Central to the story is the fictional town of Spectre, which was created by the film crew on Jackson Lake Island. The remnants of the Spectre set have been preserved by the island’s private owner, and tourists are welcome to visit and explore for a modest fee.

We found the overall property on Jackson Lake Island very well maintained, with picnic spots and clean modern restrooms. There is a herd of goats that resides on the island; fairly tame, but with a definite appetite for any snacks you may have handy. Touring the Spectre set ruins and Jackson Lake Island is a unique and interesting experience.

Located about a half hour drive north along Interstate 65 from Jackson Lake Island is Clanton AL, the seat of “peach-growing” Chilton County. Clanton features one of the more popular tourist stops in the state of Alabama, Peach Park (conveniently situated right off exit #205).

Peach Park is a family-owned business that was established in the mid-1980’s as a roadside fruit stand. The operation has expanded over the years to include a bakery, ice cream parlor, restaurant, and gift shop. We really enjoy Peach Park’s peach milk shakes (made with homemade peach ice cream) and typically get some of the mini peach pound cakes for the road. The bakery also offers some really delicious fried peach pies; enjoyed best with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Of course, you can also buy freshly picked peaches by the basket in the market section of the complex, along with other locally grown produce.

On the other side of the viaduct (opposite Peach Park) is another good pit stop for travelers, Durbin Farms Market, which has been in operation since the early 1960’s. More fresh produce, ice cream, and southern cooking.

One last touristy destination in Clanton is the “Big Peach” water tower, located about 10 minutes north of Peach Park, a little further along Interstate 65. One of the best examples of functional public art in the Southeast, the “Big Peach” is just off to the left after taking exit #212. A great souvenir photo opportunity!

Located about a 20 minute drive southeast from downtown Montgomery is Alabama Safari Park (ASP). Established in 2018 in the little town of Hope Hull, ASP covers 350 acres and offers visitors the opportunity to drive through natural habitats to observe (and feed) a variety of animals including Banteng and Watusi cattle, llamas, zebras, antelope, and bison.

We bought several buckets of animal feed at the entrance to the driving tour, and the animals we encountered were ready for a snack (and sometimes more). One of the antelopes actually grabbed the rim of our food bucket with its teeth and tried to take the whole thing. Considering the number of buckets we saw on the ground near the antelopes, they had been successful at this many times.

The park also features many walkthrough exhibits, including a platform for viewing and feeding the giraffes. The highlight of our visit to ASP was the sloth encounter. This special opportunity requires an additional fee, but it was definitely worth it. A staff member greets each encounter group (which are limited to 10 people) at the temperature-controlled sloth building, provides each person with a souvenir cup of raw vegetable pieces, and explains how to approach and offer food to the slow moving creatures.
Just watching the sloths has kind of a calming effect; they just seem so serene and carefree. This encounter was really fun, and maybe even a little therapeutic.

If you enjoy going to the zoo, you’ll find Alabama Safari Park a similar (but more engaging) experience.

Located about a 15-minute drive slightly southwest of downtown Montgomery AL is the Blount Cultural Park, home of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF) Theater. The ASF organization was started in Anniston AL in the early 1970’s, was designated the State Theatre of Alabama in 1977, and moved to Montgomery in 1985 into a large performing arts complex established by philanthropist Winton “Red” Blount and his wife, Carolyn.

The Blount Cultural Park covers 175 acres and includes the ASF Theater, the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, a dog park, ponds, walking trails, and some really impressive statuary. Our favorite sculpture on the property is the bronze by Glenna Goodacre entitled “Puddle Jumpers.” It features six children holding hands, in various states of motion, preparing to jump a puddle. Another noteworthy piece of visual art at the Park is the bronze of “Puck,” the Shakespeare character from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was created by Birmingham AL native Elizabeth MacQueen. One last sculpture highlight at ASF is the replica of the (New York) Central Park William Shakespeare statue in the theater’s Grand Lobby.

The red brick ASF Theater building features American and British flags on its roof, and offers patrons plenty of surface parking near its entrance. The Festival Stage (almost 800 seats) is located on the main level, and the more intimate Octagon Theatre (about 225 seats) is on the lower level. Probably our favorite experience at ASF was attending a presentation of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at the Festival Stage, which featured a talented cast of actors and beautiful staging.

Most of the ASF shows offer some matinees during their performance run, and we enjoy taking advantage of those so we can also budget time to explore the Cultural Park during daytime hours.
