UPDATE: JABARI PEOPLES BODY CAM VIDEO REQUESTS

We’ve heard from several of you asking if the Homewood Police Department will release the body-worn camera footage to the public.

We just received a response from HPD via email.

According to Homewood Police they will NOT be releasing body-worn camera footage to the public citing Alabama law that went into effect October 1, 2024.

HPD says Alabama law (Code Sections 36-21-210 and 212) only allows certain people to view the footage:
✔️ The person seen or heard in the video
✔️ Their legal representative (with consent)
✔️ A representative of someone who has died and appears in the footage

Even then, only the parts of the video directly related to the request will be shown.

📌 THIS NEW LAW HEAVILY RESTRICTS THE PUBLIC AND MEDIA FROM ACCESSING POLICE BODY CAM VIDEO.

🚨JABARI PEOPLES UPDATE:

We just heard from DA Danny Carr. He says the family will view the body camera video at 2:00 pm tomorrow.
As of now, Carr says the video will not be released to the public.

🚨 MURDER CHARGE DISMISSED🚨

A capital murder charge has been dropped in the 2019 shooting death of 4-year-old Jurnee Coleman.

Raymond Shine was accused of firing the stray bullet that killed her during what police say was a dispute with her father outside their Birmingham home.

Court records say Shine pointed a gun in Michael Coleman's face, then opened fire as Coleman ran past the apartment where his daughter was inside.

The case was dismissed after the state’s key witness stopped cooperating.

Because the case was dropped without prejudice, prosecutors can refile charges in the future.
