DUGONG CALF SKELETON Dugong (Dugong dugon) Local name: duyong, baboy-dagat
The Dugong is a marine mammal. It gives birth to live young and produces milk for its calf. A Dugong calf is born at a little over 1 meter in length with a weight of about 25-35 kg. Dugongs have dense bone structures and their spines are made of 57-60 vertebrae. The skull is unique for its down- turned rostrum, an adaptation for feeding on seagrass. This specimen was collected from Quezon, Palawan.
