The Birmingham Voice

The Birmingham Voice Empowering employment, quality news, creative expression of the Birmingham Homeless. Those papers are sold for 25 cents to homeless who wish to be vendors.

The goal of The Birmingham Voice is to provide a stepping-stone for the homeless who are ready to find a permanent job. Though not a permanent job itself, selling street papers through The Birmingham Voice teaches enterprising business skills that vendors can use to help them get a permanent job, while receiving a small supplementary income. As a nonprofit, we receive donations to help print The B

irmingham Voice street papers. They sell those papers to the public for $1 plus tips. As of March 2013, we're doing a bit of restructuring to better combat the challenges we've facing in getting the paper off the ground and work on moving forward. What do the homeless read?

When I appear at the fence of the Glendale homeless shelter with my rolling suitcase, I hear cries of "It's the book lady" or, if I'm with my daughter, "It's the book ladies; let them in!"

On any given night in the Birmingham area there are around 1,700 houseless people. Around 1,000 of those manage to find shelter. Check out the stats provided by One Roof: Uniting Central Alabama to End Homelessness.

One of our biggest challenges is making sure the public can identify our paper salespeople so they aren't immediately written off as panhandlers. They wear badges, but those can easily be looked over.

We're looking to get brightly colored, matching t-shirts for salespeople to help with our mission. Would you or someone you know be willing to donate t-shirts and/or printing? We and those we serve would be very appreciative. Please message us if you can help.

You want to help Birmingham's homeless, and we want to hear YOU!

Do you have ideas on how people can be more inclusive of the homeless? How to tell the difference between a homeless person and a panhandler? Places to volunteer to serve the homeless? How to make plastic bag crochet mats? Something else concerning the homeless community?

Your article/story could be featured in the next issue of The Birmingham Voice. Message us for details.

I'll never forget the first time I met Herman. He's the homeless man with the bandanas on his legs by the Southside fountain. A little girl had gotten lost from her mother and was about to run into the street. He scooped her up, bounced her on his hip, and walked her back to her panicking (and very grateful!) mother.

Has a homeless person positively affected your life or changed your outlook on the homeless? If so, tell us!

You may see homeless people on the streets in your everyday commute. Notice how they're predominantly middle-aged males? It's easy to forget that there are women, children, and seniors who are homeless, but are not visible on the street, and therefore cannot ask for the kindness of strangers. Please be mindful of the invisible homeless on your daily journeys. They fight a hard battle and they deserve a voice too.

As a nonprofit, The Birmingham Voice relies on donations to have issues printed. The overhead cost for each quarterly issue is approximately $300. Although we charge a quarter per paper to the homeless community (they sell papers for $1 plus tips), the income off a quarter a paper isn't enough to make ends meet. Please consider a monetary donation. Without you, The Birmingham Voice wouldn't be possible. Please message us for details.

Do you help the homeless people you see on the streets? Why or why not?

Are you an employer willing to hire members of Birmingham's homeless community? If so, what skills are you looking for?
