From North Dakota Mr. Basketball to the NCAA Tournament—and now the Pac-12.

This week on 70Won Sportscast, we visit with new Utah State head coach Ben Jacobson for a wide-ranging conversation about basketball, leadership, and his North Dakota roots.

Jacobson was named North Dakota Mr. Basketball in 1989 (he'll quickly remind you he shared the honor with Chris Gardner!), then went on to play at UND before coaching at both UND and NDSU—a rivalry we couldn't resist laughing about.

After 20 remarkable seasons as head coach at Northern Iowa that included five NCAA Tournament appearances and one of the biggest upsets in tournament history over a No. 1 overall seed, he's beginning a new chapter at Utah State as the Aggies prepare for their move to the Pac-12.

We spend nearly 40 minutes talking hoops, reliving memories from Bismarck, Fargo, and Mayville, reflecting on his years at UND and UNI, and hearing what excites him most about building a new program.

One of the highlights? Coach Jacobson's stories about the magic of Selection Sunday and what it feels like to hear your team's name called for the NCAA Tournament.

At 6’6”, Dexter Werner stepped onto the NCAA Tournament stage against Gonzaga Bulldogs men's basketball—a team with serious size inside.

And then…

He dropped 22 points.

On one of the biggest stages in college basketball.

His explanation?

“I kind of blacked out… shots just started falling.”
