People with dementia can receive free respite care at participating facilities in N.J. through a Medicare-funded program. Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE) covers the costs of respite care, caregiver education, professional support, and medication reviews. Participating facilities are located in Morristown, Montclair, Roseland, Cranbury, Williamstown, Edison, Cherry Hill, Jersey City, Cranbury, Mt. Laurel, and Marlton.

Free community brunch for Newark residents experiencing homeless and at-risk population planned on Dec. 14. It is from 12-3 p.m. at the Vincent Lombardi Center of Hope, 201 Bloomfield Ave. There will be music and distributions of blankets, outerwear, and other donations.

Dance fundraiser benefitting families affected by ICE planned with NJ Bomba Collective on Dec. 12 in Union City. Doors open at 6 p.m. There will be a know-your-rights training followed by a dance party. Training is free. Dance party begins at 7:30 p.m. Donations will be used to help families pay for rent, groceries, medical bills, and other expenses. Location available upon registration.

"Environmental Justice Community Engagement Session" for residents of Orange and East Orange planned with N.J. environmental protection on Dec. 9 virtually and in East Orange. It is from 6:30-8 p.m. at East Orange YMCA Turrell Gymnasium. Attendees will share concerns, ask questions, and learn about DEP resources. Interpretation is available in Spanish and Haitian Creole. Essex County residents can register for English for Speakers of Other Languages online classes starting Dec. 4 at Maplewood library. Registration is from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the library’s Hilton Branch every Thursday until Dec. 18. Registration is also from 1-3 p.m. at 90 Broad St. in Bloomfield on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Beginner and intermediate classes are from January to March. Students must show two forms of ID and have a Gmail account to register. Registration is $25.
