🚨 **Drone Enthusiasts Traveling to Mexico: A Heads-Up!** 🚨
Hey everyone, I wanted to share a recent experience (and a friend's) about traveling to Mexico with drones and other electronics. If you're planning a trip, this might save you some serious headaches—and cash.
So, I’ve been to Mexico many times with my drones—Avata, Mini 1, 2, 3, 4, Mavic, Autel—you name it. Never had an issue. But recently, I started hearing warnings about fines or penalties for bringing electronics into the country. Some even called it a scam. I was skeptical but cautious.
On my last trip (October), I brought my Mini 4, laptop, iPad, and camera. I followed advice to split everything between carry-ons and had my son carry the drone. Nothing in checked luggage. Guess what? No issues. No fines. No questions. I breezed through.
But here’s where it gets wild. A friend of mine just went to Cancun with his Mini 4 Pro. He packed it in a backpack and checked it in. When he landed, customs scanned his luggage, asked about electronics, and hit him with a $5,600 fine for the drone. Yes, you read that right—$5,600 for a $1,300 drone. They threatened arrest if he didn’t pay. After some back-and-forth, he managed to talk them down to $1,300, but that’s still insane.
To make matters worse, they also charged him for his laptop and iPad. This is beyond frustrating. I’ve traveled all over—Dominican Republic, Jamaica, etc.—and never dealt with anything like this until recently.
**So, here’s my advice if you’re traveling to Mexico with drones or electronics:**
1️⃣ **Carry-on only.** Don’t check your drone or other valuable electronics.
2️⃣ **Bring receipts.** If they ask for proof of value, you’ll have it ready.
3️⃣ **Avoid expensive gear.** Consider leaving pricier drones at home.
4️⃣ **Be prepared.** They might still try to charge you, but having documentation could help.
This seems to be a new issue, and I can’t help but feel it’s tied to recent tariff tensions. It’s frustrating that we can’t even bring our own gear on vacation without worrying about being extorted.
If anyone has tips, experiences, or advice, please share. Let’s help each other navigate this mess.
Fly safe, everyone! ✈️📸
