When you hear the word “Preeclampsia” you almost definitely think of the condition that many women develop near the end of pregnancy, sometimes leading to an emergency induction when symptoms become too much and pose a threat to the lives of mother and baby. But, what many don’t realize, is this condition can show up AFTER birth as Postpartum Preeclampsia/Eclampsia.
With my pregnancy & delivery in 2020, I developed sudden Preeclampsia that led to an emergency induction, me almost losing blood pressure multiple times, and my baby having a stay in the NICU.
When I gave birth to my baby in 2023 with literally zero complications during labor and birth, I thought that I was out of the woods and was so thankful for such an amazing birth experience. However, I was lulled into a false sense of relief. Just 7 days after giving birth, I had a sudden onset of Postpartum Preeclampsia. My blood pressure shot up to stroke level, protein in my urine, and I had the worst migraine I’ve ever had in my life. To my dismay, I was immediately readmitted to the L&D ward for treatment and was back in the hospital with my baby. My elation at such an amazing birth experience was quickly diminished by something I didn’t even know was possible! Thankfully, I was admitted in time and given treatment over the next two days that helped my body recover. Being discharged from L&D for the second time with the same baby was a surreal moment that I would never wish on another.
Please watch for the signs: high blood pressure, headache, swelling, etc. …and remember that you’re never in the clear, even after delivery!
