All Things Art CdA — Community Highlight by Chels — Northern Journeys Magazine CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026

All Things Art CdA is one of those rare creative spaces where you feel calm the moment you step inside. It’s a small shop, but the owners, two sisters, make the space feel welcoming and personal.

The layout is intentionally designed so each niche of art supplies is easy to find — fine art materials, fiber arts, trusted brands, and specialty yarns all arranged with care. Everything they carry is tested and chosen thoughtfully, which gives the shop a level of trust and expertise you can feel.

The location near the growing Prairie area makes it an easy stop for artists, families, and hobbyists, and the staff is always ready to help with genuine kindness. Their classes, from watercolor and drawing to knitting and crochet, create a sense of community that keeps people coming back.

As Northern Journeys prepares for our April CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026, we’re proud to highlight All Things Art CdA — a warm, inviting hub where creativity and connection come naturally.

"What does print advertising really do for me?"

Print feels trustworthy, it sticks around on coffee tables and counters, and it connects your business to the heartbeat of the community in a way digital ads just can’t replicate. It’s classic, it’s effective, and it still works beautifully today.

Local print keeps community stories alive, celebrates the makers and businesses that make this place special, and gives readers something real to hold onto.

Every advertiser helps keep this kind of storytelling thriving in North Journeys, and that support ripples outward in ways that strengthen the whole community. It feels good, it does good, and it keeps our shared story growing.

When you use print strategically — like pairing a strong visual with a clear call‑to‑action or timing your ad with a seasonal push — it becomes an anchor that supports everything else you’re doing.

Human Rights Education Institute — Community Highlight by Chels — Northern Journeys Magazine CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026

The Human Rights Education Institute (HREI) has been part of Coeur d’Alene’s landscape for more than two decades, offering a welcoming space for learning, conversation, and community gatherings. Located at 414 W. Fort Grounds Drive beside City Park, the building has served as HREI’s home for 22 years. Inside, visitors will find rotating art exhibits, educational displays, and programs designed to bring people together through shared experiences and curiosity.

HREI offers resources for students, educators, and community members of all ages, with activities ranging from youth programs to cultural events and a monthly book club. One of the things that makes HREI unique is its blend of education and the arts — the exhibits inside the building give visitors a chance to explore creative work while also learning about the stories and perspectives that shape our region.

A big part of what keeps HREI thriving is the dedication of its executive director, Jeanette Laster, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, a role in which she works to promote understanding and combat discrimination through various programs. She serves as a key leader for the organization, engaging with community initiatives and advocating for kindness and diversity.

As Northern Journeys prepares for our April CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026, we’re pleased to highlight the Human Rights Education Institute — a place where learning, creativity, and community connection all share the same roof.

Junior’s Cocina Mexicana — Community Highlight by Chels — Northern Journeys Magazine CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026

Junior’s Cocina Mexicana has become one of my favorite warm‑weather stops in Coeur d’Alene. In the summer, there’s nothing better than biking along the lake and pulling up to their patio — the perfect spot to sit out front, relax, and take in the breeze. The atmosphere is casual and laid‑back in a way that feels instantly welcoming, and the smell of fresh‑fried tortillas drifting from the kitchen is enough to make anyone stop and stay awhile.

Located at 313 E Coeur d’Alene Lake Drive, Junior’s brings authentic Mexican flavors to a spot that feels made for lingering. Their menu blends classic and contemporary dishes, and the whole place carries that easy, friendly energy that keeps people coming back. Inside, the space opens into a cute little bar tucked toward the back — a cozy corner that adds to the charm and makes the restaurant feel both lively and intimate at the same time.

Junior’s is family‑owned, rooted in recipes passed down through generations, and it shows in every detail — from the warm chips and salsa to the way the staff makes you feel at home.

As Northern Journeys prepares for our April CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026, we’re excited to highlight Junior’s Cocina Mexicana — a place that captures the spirit of Coeur d’Alene with good food, good company, and a patio that feels like summer itself.

Cheryl Burchell — Community Highlight by Chels — Northern Journeys Magazine CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026

Cheryl Burchell’s story in Coeur d’Alene began long before her jewelry became a local signature. She learned her craft at the bench, studying under master jewelers and developing her own voice through years of hands‑on work. Her early days in a shared downtown gallery introduced many locals to her artistry and helped shape the collaborative spirit she’s known for today.

Cheryl’s most iconic creation, the Heart Like an Awl, reflects both craftsmanship and storytelling, drawing inspiration from the history behind Coeur d’Alene’s name and becoming a keepsake for residents and visitors alike. Now working as a master goldsmith in her own shop, she continues to create custom pieces with the same care and intention that defined her early career. Customers often speak about her warmth, her attention to detail, and the artistry that shows in every design.

As Northern Journeys prepares for our April CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026, we’re proud to highlight Cheryl Burchell — an artist, a storyteller, and a longtime contributor to Coeur d’Alene’s creative community.

Katie Staib — Community Highlight by Chels — Northern Journeys Magazine CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026

There’s a certain energy in Katie Staib’s work that feels like she’s gathered pieces of every place she’s lived and brought them home to the Inland Northwest. Her background spans Japan, Central America, and years of arts education leadership at the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, and all of that experience shows up in the way she creates. Katie has a gift for blending color, culture, and storytelling into pieces that feel alive.

She’s currently teaching at Spokane Art Supply, and her students talk about how she encourages them to loosen up, play, and trust their instincts — the same qualities that make her own work so compelling. Whether she’s sculpting, painting, or designing, Katie brings a sense of curiosity and openness that makes people feel welcome in the creative process.

Katie’s most recent commissioned installation can be seen at La Condessa, the downtown CDA restaurant known for its fresh, high‑end cocktails made with house‑made ingredients and its vibrant Central and South American–inspired atmosphere — a space where her commissioned piece sets the tone the moment you walk in.

As Northern Journeys prepares for our April CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026, I’m proud to highlight Katie Staib — an artist, educator, and storyteller whose work and presence continue to enrich the cultural landscape of our region.

Cheryl Metcalf — Community Highlight by Chels — Northern Journeys Magazine CDA Edition, Spring/Summer 2026

Cheryl Metcalf’s studio in the historic Rockford Building is one of those places where you can feel the presence of the work before you even see it. Her sculptures carry a quiet power — rooted in anatomy, emotion, and story — shaped by more than fifteen years of dedicated study and practice. Cheryl began her sculpting journey under the guidance of local artist Terry Lee, later advancing through intensive anatomy courses and specialized workshops that refined her ability to bring life into bronze, resin, and clay.

Her work spans figurative, animal, angelic, and dream‑inspired forms, but each piece shares the same unmistakable sense of presence. Cheryl’s public art is woven into the fabric of Coeur d’Alene, including her larger‑than‑life bronze honoring Chief Morris Antelope, which stands near North Idaho College as a tribute to the Coeur d’Alene Tribe’s history and leadership. Her studio is also where deeply personal commissions come to life — including her recent cold‑cast resin sculpture of Jesus Christ on the cross, completed the day after Christmas. In interviews, Cheryl described the experience as profoundly spiritual, a piece that was “hard to let go” because of the emotional weight and meaning it carried.

Visitors to downtown CDA often encounter Cheryl’s work during ArtWalks, where her studio doors open to the community. Inside, you’ll find works in progress, finished bronzes, and the unmistakable energy of an artist who pours her whole heart into her craft. Cheryl’s sculptures are rooted in gratitude, imagination, and a deep respect for the stories she’s entrusted to tell. Cheryl also exhibits at Blackwell Gallery under the direction of photographer Tony Mills.

Tony Mills Photography —
Community Highlight by Chels — Northern Journeys Magazine CDA Edition Spring/Summer 2026

Tony Mills brings a lifetime of experience to every photograph he creates. After 38 years of archery hunting across the United States, he developed a deep understanding of wildlife — their habits, their rhythms, and the quiet patience required to witness them up close. Those years shaped him with discipline, respect, and gratitude, and eventually led him to begin carrying a camera into the field. What started as a way to preserve personal memories has grown into a passion for sharing moments most people may never have the chance to see for themselves.

Tony’s work centers on wildlife, nature, and the landscapes of the Inland Northwest, captured with a sense of reverence that reflects both his faith and his connection to the natural world. His images feel like invitations — glimpses into the beauty of God’s creation, offered with the hope that others might feel the same wonder he experiences in the wild. Based here in Coeur d’Alene, Tony’s photography has become a familiar presence in the local arts community. He regularly participates in CDA’s 2nd Friday ArtWalks, and his work is at Blackwell Gallery, where visitors can experience his images up close.

As Northern Journeys prepares for our April CDA Edition, we’re honored to highlight Tony Mills — a photographer whose journey, passion, and eye for the extraordinary help us see Coeur d’Alene and the world around us with renewed appreciation.
