WE HAVE HAWKS!

Tonight (April 6th) at least 125-150 Swainson’s hawks came into the valley just before dark. Clickers were clicking.

Light winds are forecasted for tomorrow, Monday morning. We expect the hawks to hang around till after sunrise likely lifting off between 8:00 and 9:30 am. To see the lift-off, we suggest you check in at the day count site for the best viewing spot. The morning site is located 2.8 miles north of Palm Canyon Drive on DiGiorgio Rd.

Temperatures will be in the high 80’s so remember to bring sun protection and lots of water.

Great morning on the hill yesterday! Counters were surprised by a group of Swainson’s that surrounded the hill at first light. These birds were not seen coming in the night before. We observed them for over an hour as they readied for lift off, sleeping and preening and then taking flight. Our intrepid leader, Hal Cohen counted kettles a mile to the east to ensure we didn’t miss any migrants. Both the am watch official counter Jon Berman and Hal Cohen came in with almost the same number! Great team effort!

As of Friday March 28th, we have counted 2,387 Swainson's Hawks migrating through Borrego Springs!

Yay!

We hope to break 3,000 in the next week.

This weekend we are participating in the Anza Borrego Foundation's 2nd annual bioblitz.

*Saturday March 29th 4:30pm - 8:00pm - evening watch site
*Sunday March 30th 7:30am - 11:00am Morning count site

The BioBlitz is a collaborative effort by scientists and the community to survey and document as many living organisms as possible within a designated area and time frame. We are using the free iNaturalist app. You'll be able to record all your discoveries. Our Hawk Watch team will help you with species identification and use of the app if you haven't used it before.
