Before Witten. Before Novacek. There was Billy Joe DuPree — the original all-around tight end who never asked for attention but always earned respect.
#89 didn’t do it for the spotlight. He did it for the star on his helmet.
A first-round pick in 1973, DuPree stepped into Tom Landry’s offense and started every game as a rookie — rare for any tight end, let alone in that system. He became a go-to option for Roger Staubach, a red zone weapon, and a blocking machine who did the dirty work with pride.
DuPree wasn’t flashy — just consistent, reliable, and physical. Played in 3 Super Bowls, made 3 straight Pro Bowls, and helped bring home the trophy in Super Bowl XII.
267 catches. 3,565 yards. 41 touchdowns.
But it was never just about the stats.
Billy Joe led by example. In the locker room. On the field. In the community. Always humble. Always team-first.
After football, he kept giving — mentoring, serving, building others up with the same quiet strength he brought to the huddle.
When you talk Cowboys history, talk Billy Joe DuPree.
Solid. Selfless. Legendary.
