Sports Desk With Dom Nicastro Join host Dom Nicastro for the latest in local sports out of the North Shore and Merrimack Valley The "Nick" in that equation retired in August 2023.

Our history:

From August 2013 to August 2023, "Nic & Nick" -- owned by Kelley Media -- ran out of 1049 FM most of those years. It went podcast on MSONewsports.com in June 2022 after the radio station was sold. We're all about sports -- and all about sports on the North Shore and Merrimack Valley of Mass. and Southern NH. Sure, we'll dabble into a few other topics here and there during our weekly

podcast, but our mission is to bring you the voices from those who make the North Shore, Merrimack Valley and Southern NH sports scenes special: athletes, coaches, experts, observers, fans, administrators and whoever's got something to say. Got a suggestion for us? Send us your thoughts right on our page. OUR HOST

It's Maddie Jewell's turn to discuss a tremendous student-athlete career at Gloucester High School, thanks to the Cape Ann Savings Bank Student-Athlete of the Week program.

We've still got a handful or so more interviews to air for the 2025-2026 athletic season, and stay tuned for the announcement early summer for the Cape Ann Savings Bank Student-Athletes of the Year!

Jewell has made her mark in nearly every corner of athletics.

A key contributor to Gloucester's Northeastern Conference championship track and field team, Jewell excels as a runner, hurdler and shotput competitor. Her versatility, work ethic and leadership helped power the Fishermen to one of their most successful seasons in recent memory.

But track is only part of the story.

Jewell is also a standout field hockey player whose Gloucester teams have been among the best in Massachusetts. In the classroom, she has matched her athletic success with academic excellence and will continue her education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she plans to study biology and explore a future in veterinary medicine.

Coming from a family with a rich athletic tradition at Gloucester High School, Jewell discusses her journey, the lessons she has learned through sports, her future goals and what it means to represent the Fishermen.

Jeferson’s story is one of perseverance, hard work and making the most of every opportunity.

Annual Cape Ann Savings Bank Student-Athlete of the Year awards ceremony.

Celebrating:

Sammy Bothwell and Ella Arntsen of Manchester Essex

Brayden Francis and Skye Ciolino of GHS Fishermen Athletics

Chase Wheat and Allison George of Rockport High School Athletics

We told the young adults today: we know you are great athletes and great students.

What this award is also about is that third component: how you are as a person. How you conduct yourself in games. In practices. How you react to failure, to loss. How you treat the young players on the team. That's the stuff we're ultimately remembered by.

These six fit the bill. Easily.

We'll have videos up from the day later this week.

Pictured among the student-athletes: the has-been Sports Desk host, Cape Ann Savings Bank President Marianne Smith and VP of Marketing Jennifer Orlando.

Thanks to the Bank for its multi-decade partnership with the Sports Desk and helping us give these amazing young men and women a platform.

GHS Fishermen Athletics' boys hockey player and 2025 GHS grad Cade Cooper catches up with us to capture the memory and legacy of teammate, fellow captain and friend Chris Dailey.

In this special episode of North Shore Sports Desk, host Dom Nicastro sits down with Cooper for an emotional conversation following the tragic loss of his close friend, teammate and fellow captain. Chris passed away in early July from injuries sustained in a car accident, leaving behind a legacy that extended well beyond the rink.

Cade opens up about their bond—formed through years of playing hockey together, working summer landscaping jobs and growing into leadership roles on the ice. He shares stories of Chris’s fierce competitiveness, his ever-present smile, his dream of walking the Greasy Pole at Gloucester’s Fiesta, and the respect he earned from teammates and rivals alike.

This tribute isn’t just about loss—it’s about honoring a young man who lived fully, led by example and left a lasting impact on his team, school, and the North Shore community.

🕊️ Rest in peace, Chris Dailey. You will never be forgotten.
