I almost didn’t post these photos from Steel City Blues …

I grew up in a conservative religious environment where the message was pretty clear: don’t draw attention to yourself. Dress modestly. Blend in. Don’t give people a reason to look.

So when I started dancing, one of the most unexpected parts of the journey was discovering that I actually liked expressing myself through clothing. Bright colors became part of how I experienced joy on the dance floor. Crop tops stopped feeling like rebellion and started feeling like… me. (Also your girl runs hot and I’ll do just about anything to stay cool on a hot dance floor).

At the same time, being more visible—both as a dancer and as someone who works in social media for this community—hasn’t always been easy.

Sometimes people reduce me to my appearance. Sometimes I get attention I never wanted and judgement I never asked for. Sometimes I wonder if people are seeing ME, or just what I look like.

And now, as I’m getting older, my body is changing. I’ve been injured twice this year. I can’t move the way I used to. Some days I look at photos and immediately notice the parts of myself I wish looked different.

These photos were one of those moments.

My first instinct wasn’t, “I look like I’m having fun.” It was, “My stomach sticks out. It’s more skin than I usually show. What will people think if I post these?”

But then I stopped and let that sit for a moment.

This body is the same body that’s carried me through years of lindy hop and dance. It’s the body that’s traveled to events, created friendships, built a business, and spent countless hours doing something I love. It’s also a body that’s healing.

Maybe being brave isn’t waiting you feel perfectly confident. Maybe it’s wearing the outfit anyway. Maybe it’s dancing anyway. Maybe it’s letting myself be seen anyway.

Dance is a physical and visual activity, as well as a personal and subjective one, so everyone is going to have to find the path and style that works for them. And where you are at in that journey will change. Maybe there will come a day where I no longer have this style of dance outfits.

But that day won’t be today.

1. I get PAID to go to dance events!

Like seriously, I never thought I would attend more than one or two local events a year because the job I had before this didn’t pay well and so traveling a lot to dance was out of the question. Flights, hotels, food, etc…I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would make money off of something I loved.

2. I get to work with some of the best, most talented people in the industry for a living.

My first ever client was THE Gordon Webster | Lindy Hop Jazz Musician , who was the one who convinced me I could do this at all. Now I have people like Annie Trudeau , Patrick of Prohibition Productions | Hot Jazz and Swing Events in NYC and more as my clients, and I brush shoulders with some of the most talented dancers and musicians in the scene. Like, come on!

3. I can work from anywhere on the hours I want.

No more catering to hybrid locations and mean bosses. I work for who I want when I want. Sometimes that means on the weekends, sometimes at 4am for a gig…but it’s for something I love. Being your own boss has a LOT of challenges, but at least I’m not dependent on the whims of some corporate company that doesn’t care about me.

4. I’m learning so much every day.

Not only is social media always changing, but working with my clients has taught me so much more about jazz, black American history, dance techniques, what it means to be a steward and a leader in this world…it makes me so honored that I get to grow in my skill as an artist as I grow in my business, and learn from some of the best in the industry.

It’s not a perfect job, but I do love it. And if you love watching my content, I’d love to help you out too! DM me to learn more about my services and offerings.
