The Power of Narrative

The Power of Narrative The Power of Narrative, hosted by Boston University's College of Communication, returns March 28-29, 2025

The Power of Narrative Conference has convened in several places and under several names, since its founding at Boston University in 1998. But our mission remains constant as storytelling journalism goes digital: helping narrative journalists strengthen their craft, following the highest ethical practices and imparting the down-to-earth humanity that characterizes the genre. Last year, we quickly

sold out all 400 seats to writers, filmmakers, podcasters, multimedia producers and graphic journalists. This year, leading print journalists will join new media figures from here and abroad to discuss fresh developments that build upon the 40-year heritage of narrative journalism. The conference talks are stimulating, sophisticated, practical and relevant, aimed at mid-career practitioner's intent on broadening their work. The vigorous Q & A sessions that follow our talks show us that we're on-target. And, at session and meal breaks you'll meet speakers and new colleagues and share ideas and aspirations.

For Black journalists who report on race and policing, the mental toll this work can take is extraordinary and often unrelenting. Lack of diversity in newsrooms exacerbates this strain on reporters. What specifically needs to change in newsrooms moving forward? What can newsrooms do to ensure that Black journalists have the support they need? How can Black journalists report these critical and important stories without burning out or breaking down?

Join us for this virtual conversation on August 11. Register here: 10728@appealcode=PONlist" rel="ugc" target="_blank">https://trusted.bu.edu/s/1759/2-bu/19/1col.aspx?sid=1759&gid=2&pgid=9250&content_id=10728@appealcode=PONlist

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the postponement of Boston University's Power of Narrative conference until next year, specifically March 19-21, 2021. This is a precaution related to the global outbreak of COVID-19.

This was an extraordinarily difficult decision, made with guidance from leadership at the College of Communication and based on advice from health organizations and practitioners. We're aware that gatherings like ours--ones that involve large numbers of people traveling from across the country and abroad, interacting, and then traveling back home--could contribute to the spread of COVID-19. We care about our Power of Narrative community too much to take that risk.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us either by emailing Associate Director Sarah Kess directly at [email protected] or calling 617-353-3484 during normal business hours, M-F 9-5.
