📚✨ Lady Tremaine by Rachel Hochhauser
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An incredible debut that’ll completely change the way you look at the story of Cinderella
✍️ Fairytale kingdom, 18th century vibes, morally gray women, a pet sidekick, & a little romance
⚠️ TW: Mention of SA, r/pe
📖 This Cinderella retelling told through the eyes of the “evil” stepmother follows Ethel, a widow desperately trying to keep her family afloat while raising her two daughters and her stepdaughter, Elin. With their lives slowly crumbling and the pressure to maintain appearances grows, the announcement of a royal ball 🏰 becomes Ethel’s last chance to secure a better future for her children. What will Ethel do to make sure everything goes to plan and their household secrets stay a secret? Pretty much anything. 👀
💬 Review: What an incredible debut!!! As someone who loooves a fairytale retelling, I really, really enjoyed this one! It was not exactly what I expected going in, but I loved the parallels to the original Cinderella story and the recontextualization of one of the most iconic “villains.” 😈
Ethel was truly the star of this story. Independent, complex (a little morally gray if you will), and impossible not to root for. Her narration was by far my favorite part of the book, especially on audio!!! 10/10 recommend doing the audio to really get the full experience. 🎧 Bessie Carter (from the show adaptation of Bridgerton!) did an incredible job bringing the character to life.
I obviously loved the little sprinkle of romance, 💘 and the darker fairytale setting was immersive and also felt real?! The realities of womanhood and survival during that time period were front & center and made the story that much more powerful.
I really enjoyed this one and while it might not be for everyone, I especially recommend it to mothers (save it for Mother’s Day 2027!!!). At its core, this story really feels like a love letter to motherhood and the sacrifices mothers make for their children. I can only imagine these themes would hit even harder for readers with children of their own. 💗
