Gretchen Troop Photography specializes in weddings, portraits, fine-art prints, events, live music and family photography.

I am inspired to pick my camera up almost every day to capture the games that light plays. I'm lucky enough to have lived in Colorado since 2003 and am quite madly in love with the land and animals I share this state with. Photography was my first art, I completed my degree in Studio Photography at Syracuse University, but after college I worked for many years as a professional lead singer and wro

I'm an avid bicyclist which was one of the larger influences that got me to move from the city of San Francisco to Colorado... the bicycle paths here are fantastic and the odds were getting stronger that I was going to get killed on the city streets. I rode only my bicycle (no car) for 16 years, which is ironic because I am the daughter of a race car driver and grew up at sports car tracks in the East Coast and now race Rallycross in Colorado. I am passionately in love with photography, wedding photography especially. Being able to use my equipment and artistic skills to provide, once in a lifetime photographs gets me hopped up. It’s essential to me that you not only enjoy working with me on the day, but that the photos take your breath away. Together, we’ll plan for photos that will mean something and we will have a great time doing it!

The Photographer’s Journey

Gretchen Troop graduated from the S.I. Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University with a major in Illustration Photography. A focus on studio photography developed her eye for detail and precision apparent in her later work. Although at first she did not pursue a career as a studio photographer, choosing instead to become a professional singer, she has continued to pursue photography and shoot all over the world.

Gretchen began shooting in black & white film, but was clearly a color photographer. Gretchen's work in graphic design made the digital camera an obvious choice. Her first digital, a Nikon Cool Pix 950 was purchased in 1999 and a whole new wave of photography began.

Most of her earlier work was shot during frequent road trips from San Francisco to Boulder, Colorado and back. Camping the whole way, she found the country between the two cities to be some of the most intensely beautiful in the world.

In 2003 she tired of living in the city and settled into life in Boulder where she bought her first digital SLR camera, the Nikon D70. This allowed her the technical freedom to once again shoot professionally. Gretchen's photography has been elevated by the capabilities of the SLR camera and her skills in digital post-processing.

In November of 2011 Gretchen got a Nikon D7000 and started acquiring new lenses and equipment. This brought her photography to a professional level and with encouragement from all she began a career in photography in earnest.

Shooting weddings, events, music and her first love, landscape/fine-art photography has kept her constantly engaged with the camera. After over 20,000 clicks on the D7000 she upgraded to a Nikon D750 in 2014. The low-light capabilities and return to full-frame photography brought a new wave of improved photography out of her studio ending in an epic shoot in Norway in June of 2017. With an increase in jobs demanding two high-end camera bodies and clients ordering larger prints she made the decision to purchase a Nikon D850 camera when it was released in 2017.

She is a long-time member of KelbyOne and Professional Photographers of America utilizing their classes and resources regularly to educate herself and keep her talents growing and evolving.
