It was 47°, with a slow drizzling rain, earlier this Wednesday morning. That was the high temperature, for the day, here in Benton Tennessee. It is now 46°, the rain has ended, and a thick, dense, fog has settled over the land…. The kind of fog my daddy used to say ‘you’d have to cut through it with a knife.’ It is also the kind of fog my grandfather liked to use as a backdrop for his stories about haints and banshees. Those stories, which always seemed the best for telling in the evenings, didn’t bother me too much in the winter. Because, in the cold of winter, I was happy to snuggle deep beneath thick layers of quilts and even cover my head. I suppose I thought a haint couldn’t find me under there. But, stories told on summer nights, created a different kind of unease. Especially on nights when the air was still without a breeze coming through an open window. The first worry was that open window… surely that was like an invitation for every haint, ghost, and banshee to come right on in. The next concern was the heat of the night. I learned, early in life, that a body slept cooler by leaving the feet uncovered. But, that cover, no matter how light weight or thin, was my only shield from haints. I couldn’t possibly leave my feet uncovered with the possibility of a haint passing by and touching my bare foot! So I lay beneath the cover, feet and head hidden, listening for the sound of the sewing machine sewing on its own … or the sound of the rocking chair on the front porch, or the sound of the door k**b rattling. Still, when granddaddy started telling his ‘tales’ I wanted to be the closest one to his chair. I didn’t want to miss a word. There was another way of avoiding haints. When there was a group of cousins, in the house, we slept in the same bed. I found a way to sleep in the middle. I was sure the haint, or banshee, would get the kids sleeping near the edge of the bed first. Good morning y’all. It is time to rise and shine. It is a good day to have a good day.

Remember, there is no perfect person out there just waiting for you to find them, every relationship is going to take work. It’s all about finding the person you’re willing to put in that work with ❤️

It is a cloudy, cold, Tuesday morning, in Benton Tennessee. It is 26° that feels like 21°. The weather app says the clouds will dissipate giving us a ‘mostly sunny’ day with a high of 39°. It looks like the next several days will bring us cold nights and mild days. So far it seems the, present, ferocious winter storm will not reach us. After a night of many ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ my head feels like it is full of sand… heavy and sleep deprived. After the fourth time getting up I had to ask myself the pertinent question. A question that great American, Merle Haggard, asked in a song. My slightly edited version of the question is ‘What in the lilly livered Sam Hill is going on?’ Some of you may have the answer; and some may be asking the question with me. We, most people, are awake, and active, at least 2/3 of a 24 hr day. In that, at least 16 hr time period, I may have to visit the little girl’s room 3 or 4 times. But let me lay my head to the pillow for half of that length of time … and I am up, some nights, at least every 45 min. to an hour. Of course this doesn’t happen every night. If it did there would be no need to go to bed! Now, mind you, the daylight hours are not always a breeze. After a certain age when the body says “Pssst, you need to tinkle”, it is not wise to reply “Okay, just a few minutes… let me finish this … oops .. I should have listened!” Most of us know where every bathroom is located in every place we shop. I like Hobby Lobby because their bathrooms are at the front of the store. That way I can follow the same advice I give myself before getting in the car. ‘Go now, before you get started.’ That seems to be a sound plan and usually works out well. But having to go more times in a 6 - 7 hour time period than you do in the previous 18 hours seems excessive to say the least. This seems to be worse for women than men. Our pelvic floor has taken a beating from child bearing .. that men didn’t have to worry about. A man can get in the vehicle and tell his wife “You better go now. ‘Cause I’m not stopping until we run out of gas, or get to Florida, whichever comes first.” These same men can go to bed, and sleep through the night, while the wife is up, and down, throughout the night. I think if I were married I would, (at least one night per week), wake my husband every time I had to get up. But then, I’d just feel guilty about disturbing his sleep. At a certain age if a lady receives a compliment like ‘You are beautiful and seem so poised’ … the knee jerk reaction is “How did you know??? Can you tell??” Whoever invented those products has to be a multi bazillionaire! When you see a ‘queen-ager’ who looks a little frayed around the edges be nice. She is probably worn out from pelvic floor exercise; she doesn’t drink anything after 6pm; she’s trying to determine where the nearest ladies room is; and she most likely had a bad night. I remember a joke that was popular when I was a kid…. ‘What is the definition of jitterbug? … It’s a fellow standing outside a pay toilet with a nickel in his hand… Good morning y’all. It is time to rise and shine. It is a good day to have a good day. Rejoice and be glad in this new day the Lord has made.

It is 23°, in Benton Tennessee, on this last day of 2025. Our forecast, for the day, is plenty of sun and 49°. It is hard to believe, in many ways, that we are on the very brink of 2026. A quarter of the 21st century is gone. It seems like just a very few years ago that we were concerned about computer systems collapsing because of entering the 2000’s. Time has always marched on. Although I remember when it marched at a reasonable pace. I remember when there seemed to be 24 hrs. in a day and 7 days in every week. The school year seemed like it would never end; summer vacation was made up of long days with enough time to do all the things we enjoyed. So much time that we played all the games we knew .. then made up games to fill the voids. From one Christmas, to the next, was an entire long year. And, birthdays took forever to come around again. In the 70’s we wondered, in awe, what the 80’s might bring. ‘Well to do’ kids carried calculators to school. My brother, after graduating business college, had a job in the data processing deparment of a large paper making company. The computer system he worked with filled an entire wall of the office he worked in. We were amazed by a new game ‘Pong’ that could be hooked up to the television and played on the screen. We watched Star Trek, and The Jetsons, entertained by the impossibilities someone had dreamed up … knowing their imaginations were working overtime. We heard rumors of electric cars, telephones that wouldn’t need a cord, explorations to the deepest ocean trench and to the far reaches of space. I knew all of that was far fetched every time I tried to untangle the curly, long, telephone cord. In 1975, my college Chemistry professor took up an entire class talking about, and demonstrating, the new ‘dial up’ computer technology the college was beginning to use. 1975 on one hand seems like a few years ago … while at the same time feeling like a lifetime ago. It has been 50 years of a whirlwind of innovations, and technological advances, that have been hard to keep up with. I don’t even know how to use all the ‘conveniences’, apps, and ‘gadgets’ on my phone. That is a bit mind blowing for a girl who remembers picking up the receiver and hearing the operator say “number please”. I think all of ‘Star Trek’ has been fulfilled except the ‘Beam me up Scotty’ part… and I’m reasonably sure that is being worked on by a group of people somewhere. We are catching up with the Jetsons by the hour. We’ve already seen prototypes of flying cars. That’s pretty astounding considering, as a kid, my parents would go outside and marvel at an airplane flying overhead; and a helicopter was totally awe inspiring. I remember when the instamatic camera was top notch technology! Now we have AI that can be used to project a person’s image, and voice, without the person’s knowledge or permission. When I was growing up the worse thing we had to worry about was someone stealing our personal journal or our diary. Now folks are stealing other people’s identity. At any rate time will keep moving on. As I said, when I was a kid it marched at a steady, reasonable, pace. The pace had increased until it seems to be jet propelled. I hope, as individuals, we can slow our pace enough to smell the roses, spend time with family and friends, share some smiles, appreciate the little things and the precious moments. Those precious moments make precious memories … which everyone needs as time goes by. Good morning y’all. It is time to rise and shine. It is a good day to have a good day. A good day to prepare for a wonderful new year.

2026 has dawned clear and cold. It is 31°, on the first day of January, in Benton Tennessee. The weather app says we will have lots of sunshine and a high of 58°. I hope this clear, beautiful, day is a propitious harbinger for the year to come. I wish all of you joy, peace, love, prosperity, and good health in the coming year. Black eyed peas, after soaking last night, are simmering on the stove… to be accompanied by yellow cornbread muffins, pork, and cabbage. Not because I believe those foods will bring prosperity, good luck, or peace. But, simply because it is Appalachian tradition. And, we might as well begin the year by having good food on day one. My Scottish ancestors practiced the tradition of ‘First Footing’ on New Year’s Day. I will just try to start the year on the right foot. As I’ve said before…I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. That eliminates the guilt, and frustration, of breaking them. I will try to be a better person; try to take advantage of more opportunities to ‘pay it forward’ when I am blessed; and I will live each day with a grateful heart. Good morning y’all. It is time to rise and shine. It is an excellent day to have a good day. It’s time for the first mug of spicy coffee in 2026.
Happy New Year my precious friends.
