State line crossed. Spirits high. Rifles ready. West Virginia greeted us with low clouds and higher hopes. Time to disappear into the hills and hunt the week away.

That morning, the sky was a dull pewter, the kind that promises snow without saying when. I’d hiked out before sunrise, coffee in hand, just wanting that soft winter silence that you can’t find anywhere else. I found a downed log by the creek, brushed off the frost, and sat long enough that the cold seeped through my layers — but in that good way. The “I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be” way.

The world was still. Nothing moved. Even the creek sounded like it was half-asleep.

And then she appeared.

A red fox stepped out from behind a cluster of winter-bare saplings, her coat bright even in the muted morning light. She didn’t slink or stalk — she glided, like she was stitched to the rhythm of the woods. For a moment, she didn’t even notice me. I just watched her, breath held, letting her have the moment before I even dared to be part of it.

When she finally turned her head and saw me, there was no panic. No bolt. Just a long, thoughtful look. A quiet assessment. Predator? Threat? Or just another creature trying to find some peace in the cold?

I didn’t move, didn’t blink. She kept walking, slow, deliberate steps through the frost, tail floating behind her like a brush dipped in fire. She crossed right in front of me — close enough I could hear her paws crunch the snow crust — then disappeared into the gray trees like a spark fading into smoke.
