Nobody questioned why Evelyn Cross sang at the Velvet Cactus Saloon every Thursday night. Men came for whiskey, gambling, and her voice — but mostly to forget how dangerous the frontier truly was.
In truth, Evelyn wasn’t just a singer. She was one of the most dangerous undercover detectives in the western territories. For eight months, she had been hunting the man known only as The Baron — the shadow controlling the largest illegal weapons network on the frontier.
Evelyn stepped onto the stage in a crimson dress, the room falling silent the moment she began to sing. While her voice floated through the smoky air, her sharp eyes scanned every face and reflection in the whiskey glasses. A nervous gambler with military maps. A railroad executive carrying coded documents. Three armed smugglers near the balcony.
But one man stood out.
Lucien Graves. Expensive black suit, calm demeanor, and eyes that never lingered on her beauty — only her hands. Like he knew exactly what dangerous people looked like.
After her performance, Lucien approached her table. “You sing beautifully,” he said.
Evelyn lit a cigarette and replied with a cool smile, “And you lie beautifully.”
Lucien chuckled softly.
Then a sniper bullet shattered the window beside her head.
BANG.
Chaos erupted. Tables flipped. People screamed. Gunfire filled the saloon as assassins stormed through the front doors.
Through the smoke, Lucien drew his revolver — not at Evelyn, but at the killers rushing in.
The Baron had found them both.
