It's the first day of School! Sharing some photos of Neshobe and Mr. Nelson high-fiving students, Mrs. Roy at Lothrop, shouting morning salutations and newly-minted middle schoolers arriving at OVUS.

We hope everyone has a safe, happy and healthy school year!

To those heading to Rutland this morning, an accident just before 9:00 a.m. has stopped traffic just north of Sangamon Road. Cars are being detoured. No information on those involved, but we'll update again when we hear traffic has cleared.

We want to hear from you!

Over the last month, we’ve explored how folks are using AI, pulling from sources like MIT and IBM to best explain what it is. We’ve talked about how chatbots are the most commonly used type (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) and while they can be useful, they also need to be used with caution as they’re not always correct and have been scrutinized regarding AI’s effects on mental health.

We also put in an information request to Town Manager Seth Hopkins and Selectboard Chair Cecil Reniche-Smith about how the town of Brandon is using AI and whether there are any policies regarding its use. At this time it’s used sparingly, mostly to record selectboard meeting minutes that are vetted by Hopkins and others. There are no written policies at this time. A request for a policy about how students may be using AI in the classroom has gone unanswered from Otter Valley Union High School, but we’re hoping to get that information for future articles.

While we have other articles planned around this topic (including AI scams), we’re wondering, what else would you like to know about AI, or even tech in general? Please leave your comments or questions below and they may help shape a future article!

Here are those two articles in case you missed them:

When Jessica Fjeld saw the sign go up in the window of Carr's Gifts announcing that the longtime Brandon shop was for sale, she felt something deeper than concern about losing the beloved family-owned business.

"I was afraid of losing this important community space,” she said. “If it didn't get filled, [the empty storefront] would be like a dead tooth in the middle of a smile."

That moment set in motion a new chapter for Brandon's downtown. Fjeld and her husband Ben Bearnot purchased the building, allowing Delilah's Hair Salon to remain where it is in the same building and renting part of the former Carr’s Gifts space to a toy store called Simon Says. In the process, Fjeld also fulfilled a dream she has carried since childhood: opening her own shop.
