The author George R.R. Martin received many offers to adapt his literary saga, A Song of Ice and Fire, for the cinema; however, he felt the books were too extensive for a film. He had deliberately written them to be virtually impossible to film and also rejected offers to adapt only certain plotlines.
When David Benioff and D.B. Weiss approached him about adapting the story into a series, he famously asked them who Jon Snow’s mother was. Satisfied with their response, he gave them his blessing.
The series' creators admitted they pitched the show to HBO by focusing on the human drama and the interactions between characters, which kept the initial production costs relatable. They correctly assumed that none of the studio executives had read the 4,000 pages Martin had written by that point and were unaware of the costly scenes that would need to be filmed later.
