I've always held a special place in my heart for cemeteries, it was another memory with my dad. He would visit his mother every evening in the cemetery and often I would go along for the ride. Oftentimes we would explore other cemeteries as well. They have just always been very revered and not feared. The other evening I walked past Nazaré’s primary cemetery, Cemitério da Pederneira, and was drawn in. I was awestruck by how special each and every grave was. Fresh flowers, pictures, statues and all so ornate. The cemetery sits on high ground above Nazaré, overlooking the Atlantic and the town. This location is symbolic: many of those buried there lived their lives tied to the ocean, and the cemetery’s elevated position feels like a final watch over the waters that were the life blood of the community. Portuguese cemeteries are deeply reflective of the country’s Catholic heritage, maritime history, and strong bonds between family and place. I was so in wonder walking around this holy ground, it was obvious that this is a deeply caring and God loving culture who honor and remember their departed loved ones in remarkable ways.
