The conflict in Iran isn’t just a geopolitical story — it’s a wake-up call about how fragile our fossil fuel-based energy system really is.

Nearly 20% of the world’s oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a single chokepoint now facing serious disruption. When that flow is threatened, the entire world feels it — from rising gas prices to economic and politcal instability.

We’re watching it happen in real time: energy markets shaking, prices spiking, and supply chains straining.

Here’s the hard truth;
As long as we rely on fossil fuels concentrated in volatile regions, every conflict has the power to ripple into our daily lives.

But there’s a way forward.

Renewable energy — solar, wind, and other local sources — can’t be blockaded, embargoed, or weaponized. They can be built at home, scaled locally, and provide stability in a world that feels increasingly unpredictable.

This isn’t just about climate anymore.
It’s about energy independence. National security. Economic stability.

Countries that invest in renewables are better insulated from global shocks — while those that don’t remain vulnerable to every crisis overseas.

The Iran conflict is a warning.
Not just about war — but about dependence.

The question isn’t if we transition to renewable energy.
It’s how fast we choose to do it.

“Part Of That World”

Inspiration can arrive quietly, disguised as nostalgia, memory, or even fantasy. Sometimes it waits patiently inside stories we first encounter as children, only revealing its deeper meaning years later. For me, that story was Disney's "The Little Mermaid". What began as admiration for a beloved animated film slowly transformed into something far more personal: a catalyst for self-discovery, courage, community, and creativity. By 2019, what once lived only in imagination became a path I chose to walk — or more accurately, to swim.. . .
Growing up," The Little Mermaid" was simply magic. Like many others, I was captivated by its colors, music, and the sense of wonder that radiated from Ariel’s world. The ocean shimmered with possibility. The idea of transformation, of becoming something more aligned with one’s inner self, felt enchanting even if I couldn’t articulate why. As a child, fantasy is accepted without question. Ariel wasn’t symbolic — she was real in the way childhood imagination makes everything real.

But childhood admiration often fades into adulthood practicality. Responsibilities replace daydreams. Fantasy yields to realism. Years passed, and though the movie remained a fond memory, it existed mostly as a nostalgic reference point rather than an active influence. Or so I thought.
Everything shifted in 2019.
That year, I visited Weeki Wachee Springs, a place long known for its live mermaid performances. I went expecting novelty — something charming, perhaps kitschy, a pleasant diversion. What I encountered instead felt unexpectedly profound. Watching the mermaids glide effortlessly through the water was unlike anything I had seen before. Their movements were fluid, graceful, deliberate. They were not caricatures or costumes. They were performers, athletes, artists — embodiments of something both whimsical and disciplined.
I remember standing there, transfixed, experiencing a strange mixture of awe and disbelief. A question formed almost instinctively: Is this real?
It was not a question about illusion. I knew intellectually that these were humans performing underwater. The deeper question was existential. Could this identity — this blending of imagination and reality — truly exist outside of fiction? Could “being a mermaid” be more than a metaphor?
Later, wandering through the gift shop, I noticed the mermaid tails and monofins. Bright, shimmering, tactile symbols of transformation. Something about seeing them there — not in a cartoon, not on a screen, but tangible and purchasable — created a cognitive shift. The idea moved from fantasy into possibility.

The seed had been planted. So I purchased my first monofin and mermaid tail, a fabric FinFun tail and plastic monofin, learning how to use it at my pool through videos available online.
At first, the notion felt playful, almost humorous. A curiosity rather than a commitment. But curiosity has a way of deepening when it resonates with something internal. I began to research. What I discovered surprised me: there was an entire community of “merfolk” — people who embraced mermaiding as a lifestyle, art form, fitness practice, and creative identity.
This revelation was pivotal. Suddenly, the concept was no longer solitary or imaginary. It was shared, practiced, evolving. Real people, real skills, real dedication.
About a year later, I found the Tampa Area Pod Squad on Facebook, now the Tampa Mermaid Pod.
Joining that pod became one of the most transformative decisions of my life. What began as tentative exploration quickly evolved into connection. Here were individuals from different backgrounds, professions, and geographies, united by a common passion. There was no singular definition of what it meant to 'be a mermaid'. Some approached it as performance, others as fitness, others as artistic expression, environmental advocacy, or personal empowerment.
What struck me most was the authenticity. This was not escapism. It was integration — weaving imagination into lived experience rather than fleeing reality.
Within this community, I learned something crucial: mermaiding was not merely aesthetic. It required training, safety awareness, and technical skill. Conversations frequently referenced diving certifications, breath control, underwater safety protocols, and organizations like PADI.

Until that point, I had never considered diving certification as part of the mermaid journey. The ocean, after all, had always represented both fascination and fear for me. Deep water carried an undercurrent of anxiety. The unknown depths evoked discomfort. My relationship with water was cautious rather than confident.
Yet inspiration rarely coexists comfortably with fear.
Learning about PADI certification reframed the challenge. It was no longer about fantasy identity — it was about acquiring real-world competence. Skills. Knowledge. Confidence. Safety.
Fear began to transform into motivation.
Anxiety is a subtle adversary. It does not always manifest as dramatic panic; often it appears as hesitation, avoidance, rationalization. The thought of deep water had long lived in that quiet space of discomfort. It was easier not to confront it.
But the mermaid journey demanded confrontation.
Pursuing certification required me to face my unease directly. The early stages were not glamorous. They involved vulnerability — acknowledging fear, learning unfamiliar techniques, trusting instructors, and gradually surrendering to an environment that once triggered apprehension. Each small success became meaningful. Each controlled breath, each moment of buoyancy, each exercise completed without retreat represented more than skill acquisition. They were psychological milestones. I was not simply learning to dive. I was learning to trust myself.

Over time, fear did not vanish entirely, but it lost its dominance. Confidence began to replace apprehension. Deep water shifted from threat to territory — a space that could be navigated rather than avoided. This transformation extended far beyond aquatic environments.

Confidence is transferable. As my comfort in water grew, so too did my willingness to explore other forms of self-expression. Within the mermaid community, creativity flourished. Photography, costuming, performance, storytelling — all were celebrated. But one avenue, unexpectedly, became deeply personal for me: music. Somewhere along this journey, I discovered a talent I had not fully recognized before — writing songs and singing.

Creativity often lies dormant until activated by the right context. The mermaid identity, with its inherent theatricality and emotional resonance, created fertile ground. Music became a natural extension of the experience. The ocean, transformation, resilience, imagination — these themes invited lyrical exploration.

Writing songs allowed me to articulate feelings that were otherwise difficult to express. Anxiety, once a constricting force, became material. Fear became narrative. Growth became melody.

Singing introduced another layer of vulnerability. Voice is deeply personal. To sing is to reveal — emotion, imperfection, sincerity. Yet within this creative framework, expression felt less intimidating. The mermaid persona provided both authenticity and permission.

I was not hiding behind fantasy, I was discovering my voice through it.

Looking back, it becomes clear that this journey was never solely about becoming a “real-life mermaid.” That phrase, while charming, oversimplifies the depth of transformation involved. The mermaid identity became a vehicle — a symbolic and practical pathway toward confronting fear, building confidence, cultivating community, and embracing creativity.
What began with a childhood movie evolved into lived experience.
The Little Mermaid offered the original spark. Weeki Wachee provided tangible inspiration. The online pod delivered connection. PADI certification cultivated courage. Music unlocked expression.
Each step built upon the last.
Perhaps the most profound realization is this: inspiration does not require abandonment of reality. It can coexist with responsibility, adulthood, and practicality. Fantasy, when approached thoughtfully, can serve as a bridge rather than an escape — linking imagination with growth. The mermaid journey taught me that identity is not static. It can be playful, evolving, layered. One can honor imagination while engaging deeply with skill, discipline, and self-awareness. Fear, too, is not fixed. It can be negotiated, reframed, softened through deliberate exposure and persistence. Anxiety, while challenging, can become fuel for creativity.Community can emerge from the most unexpected shared passions.
And perhaps most importantly, childhood wonder need not be discarded. It can mature, deepen, and reappear in ways that enrich adult life rather than contradict it.
Ariel’s story, once simply entertaining, now resonates differently. It is no longer about a mythical transformation from mermaid to human. It is about longing for authenticity, courage to pursue change, and willingness to cross boundaries — emotional, psychological, creative. In many ways, my journey mirrors that deeper narrative. Not because I sought to replicate fiction, but because fiction illuminated possibility. The ocean that once symbolized fear became a space of empowerment.

A voice that was once hesitant became expressive.
The imagination once nostalgic became active.
Inspiration became action.
And action became transformation.

What began in 2019 continues to ripple outward. Growth is not a singular event but an ongoing process. Confidence, creativity, and connection continue to evolve. The mermaid identity remains both symbol and practice — a reminder that wonder and courage are not mutually exclusive, that fear can coexist with progress, and that inspiration can originate from the most unexpected sources-a movie, a performance, a question asked in a gift shop- 'is this real?'

The answer, I have learned, is beautifully complex; yes. Not in the literal sense of mythology, but in the far more meaningful sense of lived experience. Real courage. Real growth. Real creativity. Real connection, real transformation. And, perhaps that is the truest form of magic.

In the end, the most unexpected lesson of this journey is not about tails, performances, or even the ocean itself. It is about the quiet realization that real life can, in its own way, be more magical than a Disney movie. Not because it imitates fantasy, but because it allows us to live out transformations that are deeply, undeniably real.

Stories like 'The Little Mermaid' captivate us with visions of enchanted kingdoms, shimmering castles, and worlds hidden beneath the waves. As children, we accept that magic requires spectacle — something grand, distant, otherworldly. But experience teaches a different truth. Magic does not demand a kingdom. It does not require an enchanted castle rising against the sky. That is the quiet, enduring truth hidden beneath fantasy: the most meaningful transformations are not granted by spells. They are earned through courage. They unfold gradually, often imperfectly, shaped by persistence rather than pixie dust.. . .when anxiety gives way to courage, when imagination evolves into action, when connection replaces isolation., when creativity emerges from vulnerability, anyone who longs to, anyone with a wish in their heart can become 'part of that world'
