The Brockport Blog Caurie Putnam is a longtime Rochester print journalist. The Brockport Blog has been her passion project since 2010.

I'm proud to have called Brockport home for the past 22 years. I love it because it has a small town feel, but the presence of SUNY Brockport adds a small city flavor. I moved to Brockport after graduating from the University of Rochester in 1998 to cover the community as a reporter for Messenger Post Newspapers. I grew up in Connecticut and the Saratoga Springs area, but fell in love with Brockpo

rt and decided to raise my family here. I wrote for for the Democrat and Chronicle (D&C) for over 10 years. The Brockport Blog and this page was started by the D&C in 2011. When the D&C disbanded all blogs and, later, my columnist positions (due to COVID-19 downsizing) I continued this page as a community service. I have also covered Brockport and WNY for Reuters. I am the current content coordinator for Spencerport Neighbors Magazine, a publication of Best Version Media and I also freelance for the Rochester Business Journal. My Brockport activities include: The Brockport Moms Club, Brockport PTSA, JJ's Angels and Brockport Jewish Community. As the Brockport Blogger, my goal has always been to bring you positive, family centered, community news and photos. Brockport is the hidden gem of Monroe County and I love to make it sparkle. Congratulations to Oak Orchard Health CEO Karen Kinter for being named a 2025 Women of Excellence Award winner by the Rochester Business Journal (RBJ).

The Women of Excellence awards recognize high-achieving women for their career accomplishments, including professional experience, community involvement, leadership, and sustained commitment to mentoring.

Kinter, a native of Albion, is among this year’s class, which features 50 women from a variety of industries. Winners were honored at an awards celebration on May 8th at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

“I’m honored to be selected among this group of leaders for the Women of Excellence award. Leading an organization that positively impacts numerous lives across a vast geographic area is incredibly fulfilling. We provide medical, dental, and behavioral health services to everyone,” Kinter said. She oversees Oak Orchard Health, a non-profit federally qualified health center, with 34,000 patients at nine locations, including its headquarters in Brockport.

With more than 20 years of health care experience, Kinter previously served as vice president of specialty revenue program and CEO of Regional Health Services for Rochester Regional Health. She holds an MBA from the University of Rochester’s Simon School of Business.

Thank you to the Brockport Volunteer Fire Department and the many fire departments that provided mutual aid today skillfully battling an intense fire on the campus of the Brockport Central School District. Thank you also to the responding police agencies, Monroe Ambulance and BCSD security for their support. Looking at these photos it is incredible and such a relief nobody was hurt. It’s a testament to all of these first responders.

Brockport Wiffleball is live right now until about 7:30 pm for anyone interested. Lots of former BHS baseball standouts are in the five-team league, which was founded by my oldest son Brice and co-managed by Sam Bonisteel. This year’s season is dedicated to their late beloved friend Ethan Miller (you may notice the green “E”s on their jerseys 💚) To learn more about the league (founded in 2021) check out their Instagram and/or website

What an amazing turnout and feeling of community celebration today as the Brockport Pedestrian Bridge was dedicated. The bridge is absolutely beautiful and I want to take a moment to remember its project manager Brandon Freeman who did not get to see it finished (he passed away in March 2025 at age 39). It is a lasting legacy. My favorite part of today was seeing the intergenerational excitement about the bridge - little ones, members of the BHS marching band, SUNY Brockport students, parents, grandparents...it was really special. Hopefully, I captured some of that in my photos.

The bridge is located immediately west of the existing canal guard gate, which is still in operation to isolate and control water levels in the Erie Canal. The pedestrian bridge is just one of the economic development projects associated with the Reimagine the Canals portfolio, a $300 million NYS initiative announced in 2020. The New York Power Authority funded the bridge in part through a $2 million grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation.

The ribbon cutting for the new Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge - which connects the Empire State Trail to the campus of SUNY Brockport - will be held on Friday, June 13, 11 a.m., at Commissary Park, 308 Holley Street, Brockport. Free parking is available at SUNY Brockport Lot D on Holley Street.

Organizers would like to assemble more than 200 people for a photo on the bridge and in boats/kayaks below it, as 2025 also marks the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal.

The bridge is located immediately west of the existing canal guard gate, which is still in operation to isolate and control water levels in the Erie Canal.

The pedestrian bridge is one of the economic development projects associated with the Reimagine the Canals portfolio, a $300 million NYS initiative announced in 2020. The New York Power Authority funded the bridge in part through a $2 million grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation.

I stopped by a few days ago to take some photos of the bridge for you all and it looks great. A very unique and special addition to our community.💙Caurie

Despite the rain, the Community Health Fair at Oak Orchard Health
(OOH) on Saturday, May 31, in Brockport was fun and educational for all, especially for kids and their families.

The fair was a convenient way for people to get valuable information, free screenings, and giveaways. One of the most popular was the dental screenings with Dr. Rachel Nozzi and the OOH hygienists.

Though the tables and Kid Zone were moved indoors, the Kiwanis Club of Brockport, NY weathered the storm and served pancakes outdoors throughout the morning.

Oak Orchard Health was available for blood pressure screenings, blood glucose checks, vision screenings, and information on healthy eating, WIC, behavioral health and the OOH Patient Portal.

UR Medicine, UR Dermatology, and URMobilEyes provided health screenings, including mammograms, skin cancer checks, and eye exams and the Wilmot Cancer Center table got plenty of interest on this important topic.

Fidelis Care Health Insurance provided valuable information and giveaways like stress balls and pens. The Brockport Community Connection "BCC" was also on hand to connect residents with services, including emergency assistance.

Oak Orchard Health would like to thank the Greater Rochester Health Foundation for sponsoring the fair and to everyone who participated in the event. 💙Caurie

Thank you to the many Brockport High School students and staff who volunteered their time tonight for a music benefit for the Morgan Manning House's fire restoration.

It was a beautiful evening filled with great music, fellowship, food and intergenerational love for our village's historic gem.

Thank you also to the many local businesses and community members who generously donated gorgeous raffle baskets and items (see last photo for a list).

The event was sponsored by Brockport High School's Tri-M & National Honor Societies. Outstanding job Blue Devils! 💙Caurie
