NYCFC presents Ghanaian Community Night!

On August 21, New York City Football Club will face off against Columbus Crew SC at Yankee Stadium. Soccer loving Ghanaians in and around New York have been granted a rare opportunity to meet New York City Football Club’s Ghanaian player, Ebenezer Ofori. Ofori was born in Kumasi, Ghana, and is on loan from German club VfB Stuttgart, as a midfielder.

As summer draws to a close, Ghanaian communities in the Big Apple in particular and the Tri-State area, will have the honor to witness another Ghanaian battle in the MLS as NYCFC midfielder Ebenezer Ofori welcomes compatriots David Accam, Harrison Afful and Jonathan Mensah to the Bronx.

For this occasion, NYCFC will be bringing together a large group to celebrate as Ghanaian Community Night at the match.

The Bronx boasts a sizable Ghanaian community, hence the laudable idea by NYCFC to bring together a true soccer nation at Yankee Stadium.

According to the Club, special tickets for Ghanaians are on sale at a special price of $17 at Eric Darko Law Office at 299 Broadway, as well as, Papaye Restaurant, 2300 Grand Concourse.

NYCFC is hopeful that many Ghanaians will come in their beautiful Ghanaian colors to show their love for the four players.

As part of the event, the first 75 fans who will buy their tickets will get the opportunity to meet NYCFC’s Ebenezer Ofori after the match.

🇬🇭GHANA DEFENDER LALAS ABUBAKAR IN MLS WEEK 15 TEAM OF THE WEEK, FRANCIS ATUAHENE SCORES ON HIS DEBUT FOR FC DALLAS! ⚽️⚽️

Ghana and Colorado Rapids defender Lalas Abubakar took advantage of the fewer Major League Soccer (MLS) games over the weekend to register his name in the Team of the week for Week 15 of the 2019 MLS.

He was the fulcrum of the Colorado defense when they defeated Minnesota United 1-0.

Also taking advantage of the weekend was young Francis Atuahene who registered his MLS debut goal in his debut game for FC Dallas when they held San Jose Earthquakes to a 2-2 draw on the road.

His debut performance earned him a place in the Week 15 reserve team.

Atuahene, 23, who was selected by FC Dallas with the 4th overall pick in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft, was in action for the last 26 minutes but he will surely not forget this day as he helped Dallas snatch a point away from home on his debut.

The young Ghanaian was introduced into the game on the 64th minute when Dallas were trailing 1-2, but his first major contribution on the 65th minute was that wonderful strike with the outside of his right foot that beat the San Jose goalie.

Atuahene said after the game that “I was happy to get my debut. I was happy that I contributed the moment I came into the game”.

According to the young Ghanaian, he did not know he was going to get his debut game but he was always prepared for the opportunity.

It was a relatively light week in terms of games in Week 15 of the 2019 MLS regular season, but Abubakar and Atuahene will savor more of such opportunities.

Asamoah Gyan rescinds decision to retire from Black Stars after Presidential intervention

‘Former Black Stars captain-now-general captain’, Asamoah Gyan, has rescinded his decision to retire from the senior national team.

This follows a Presidential intervention by Ghana’s President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who spoke to Gyan and the Black stars coach Kwasi Appiah after the former quit the national team last Monday.

It would be recalled that Gyan, highly touted as Ghana’s all-time goal scorer, shockingly retired from the national team over a harmless captaincy issue. Coach Appiah had decided to strip the striker of the captaincy and that decision did not go down well with the Turkey-based striker who decided to call time on his memorable international career.

In a statement, the former captain noted that he had had a fruitful conversation with the President who asked him (Gyan) to rescind his decision to retire from the national team.

“A Presidential request is one that cannot be disregarded.

“I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in good faith, and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah”, the statement added.

Gyan also reminded Ghanaians of his resolve to help the team win the African Cup of Nations.

“My desire to help Ghana end the over three-decade long wait to annex the AFCON trophy still burns strong, and I remain committed to serving this great nation and the people of Ghana”, he concluded.

MLS: GHANAIAN WINGERS ACCAM AND LATIF HOPING TO HELP UNION AND LAFC CONSOLIDATE LEAD

The Major League Soccer (MLS) is only 10 weeks old but Ghana’s David Accam and Latif Blessing are hoping that their respective clubs can consolidate their positions in both conferences.

Latif Blessing’s Los Angeles FC have already been tagged as the best team in this year’s league after assuming pole position in the Western Conference while Accam’s Philadelphia Union also occupy the top spot in the Eastern Conference after defeating FC Cincinnati 2-0 in a midweek clash.

This weekend, Accam and his Philadelphia Union teammates are at home to New England Revolution and a win at the Talen Energy Stadium will keep them at the summit of the Eastern Conference table, at least for another week.

Accam has so far played seven games and scored three goals this season and he will surely relish another stellar performance for the Union.

Latif has also remained an integral member of the formidable LAFC and as they entertain Chicago Fire at home, their fans can only look forward to one thing – victory.

The DC United - Columbus Crew encounter will also provide some Ghanaian interest with the likes of Harrison Afful, Jonathan Mensah and Lalas Abubakar all available for selection.

GHANA'S ROY BOATENG AND ANDERSON ASIEDU DRAFTED NO. 16 AND 24 RESPECTIVELY AT THE 2018 MLS SUPERDRAFT!

The 2018 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft was a dream come true for two young Ghanaians who were among the first 24 players drafted by various MLS clubs.

Defender Roy Boateng, a product of University of California, Davis, and midfielder Anderson Asiedu of University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), were drafted by New York Red Bulls and Atlanta United respectively.

The Red Bulls acquired Boateng from Cincinnati via a trade as the No. 16 overall pick. The four-year letterman at UC Davis started 81 of the 84 possible matches for the Aggies in four seasons.

Boateng was named a two-time All-Far West Region selection by United Soccer Coaches and he is currently the reigning two-time Big West Defensive Player of the Year.

Atlanta United selected Anderson Asiedu with the No. 24 overall pick.

Asiedu, 22, is a native of Dormaa Ahenkro, Ghana and played collegiately at UCLA and Monmouth University. He was a two-time All-Pac 12 Conference player and totaled four assists and three goals in two seasons with the Bruins.

He was named MVP of the 2019 MLS Combine. Before transferring to UCLA, he was named All-MAAC in his two seasons with Monmouth where he recorded five assists and two goals.

UCLA GHANAIAN MIDFIELDER ANDERSON ASIEDU AMONG FIRST INVITED PLAYERS FOR 2019 MLS PLAYER COMBINE!

The adidas MLS Player Combine is here again! And as usual, some young Ghanaian soccer players will come close to realizing their dreams of playing professional soccer in North America.

This is the time that young and prospective professional soccer players get the chance to exhibit their talents in front of the Major League Soccer (MLS) clubs.

Among the first 60 young invited players is Ghana and The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) senior midfielder Anderson Asiedu. The young Ghanaian is one of the initial college players invited to participate in the 2019 MLS Player Combine when the lists was revealed.

Young Asiedu and many top collegiate players from across the country will showcase their talents in front of representatives from all 24 MLS clubs in Orlando, Florida from January 3-9, 2019.

All invited players for this special exercise will be eligible for selection in the 2019 SuperDraft which will take place on Friday, January 11 in Chicago's McCormick Place in conjunction with the United Soccer Coaches Convention.

A committee of MLS coaches and NCAA Division I coaches from every conference selected the invitees, all of whom completed their college eligibility this season.

Further invitees including Generation adidas signings, non-collegiate players, and additional college seniors will be announced in the coming weeks.

Asiedu was named All-Pac-12 Second Team in both of his seasons at UCLA. In two years with the Bruins, he appeared in 34 games (33 starts), scoring three goals and adding four assists for 10 points. He matched a career-high with two goals as a senior in 2018, chipping in a pair of assists for six points.

Asiedu who resides in Hoboken, New Jersey, spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Monmouth before transferring to UCLA where he closed his career with five goals and nine assists.

FIVE GHANAIANS TO PLAY KEY ROLES IN MLS CUP PLAYOFFS AS FOOT SURGERY RULES KOFI OPARE OUT!

At least five Ghanaians are hoping to play significant roles for their respective clubs in the Knockout Round of the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs.

The Knockout Round of the Postseason are single-elimination games for clubs occupying the third to sixth positions on the league log of both Eastern and Western Conference. Winners from this round will advance to the Conference Semifinals which are two-game series and aggregate-goal format between conference top seed vs.
lowest advancing seed from Knockout Round and conference second seed vs. highest seed from Knockout Round.

Of the four Knockout matches, three are most likely to see some Ghanaians involved.

Black Stars midfielder Ebenezer Ofori is likely to star for New York City FC (3rd Eastern Conference) when the blue side of New York welcome Philadelphia Union (6th Eastern Conference) to the Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.

The Union will miss the services of Ghanaian forward David Accam who is recuperating from a hernia surgery but Derrick Jones Amaniampong and C J Sapong who are American players with some Ghanaian backgrounds will feature for Philadelphia.

On Thursday, DC United who placed third on the Eastern Conference league table will host Columbus Crew who placed fifth at the Audi Field. At least three Ghanaians will be on queue for selection as Columbus Crew’s Ghanaian defensive trio – Harrison Afful, Jonathan Mensah and Lalas Abubakar – attempt to stop the Wayne Rooney-led attack of DC United.

However, DC United will miss the services of defender Kofi Opare who is unavailable for selection due to a foot surgery.

The Western Conference encounter between Los Angeles FC and Real Salt Lake will see winger Latif Blessing in action for LAFC. Latif who was selected among the best MLS players below the age of 22 has already played a major role in LAFC’s qualification to this year’s postseason playoffs.

GHANA AND LAFC WINGER LATIF BLESSING RATED AS ONE OF THE BEST YOUNG PLAYERS IN THE MLS!

Ghana’s Latif Blessing has been selected among the best Major League Soccer (MLS) players below the age of 22.
This year’s ‘22 Under 22’ compiled by MLSsoccer.com made Latif the 11th best MLS player under age 22.

Latif played a major role in Los Angeles FC’s qualification to this year’s postseason playoffs. He has played 1,742 minutes in 28 regular season games, scoring five and assisting six.

The Ghanaian who started his MLS career with Sporting KC, was selected by LAFC in the expansion draft, and has remained integral in coach Bob Bradley’s plans. He’s been forever grateful to the American coach for reposing confidence in him.

“Bob just believes in me. Under Bob, I’m so on form now. He’s a very good coach and motivates me all the time, he encourages me”, Latif noted in an interview with his club website.

Other players on the ‘22 Under 22’ list with some Ghanaian connections include American youth player Derrick Jones Amaniampong who occupies the number 22 on the list. Jones who was born in Ghana arrived in the US when he was 14. He represented the US in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Occupying number 2 is the 19-year-old Tyler Adams who plays for New York Red Bulls and the United States Men’s National Team. Some unsubstantiated reports suggest that Tyler’s biological father is a Ghanaian.

Vancouver Whitecaps’ prodigy, Alphonso Davies was voted the overall best of the ‘22 Under 22’. The 17-year-old who is on his way to Bayern Munich on a record transfer fee for the MLS is widely regarded as the best prospect ever produced by an MLS academy.

Davies was born in Buduburam, a refugee camp in the Gomoa East District of Ghana, to Liberian parents. His parents lived in Ghana after fleeing their homeland during the second Liberian Civil War. He was five when his family came to Canada as refugees.

GHANAIAN DEFENDER KOFI OPARE EARNS PLAUDITS FROM DC UNITED COACH! Coach of DC United Ben Olsen has acknowledged that the steady progress of Ghanaian defender Kofi Opare in the ongoing Major League Soccer (MLS) is a major boost to their revival. Opare, 26, has worked himself into United’s starting lineup and has played 21 games this season, leading the team with 16 blocked shots and duels won percentage. The Ghanaian defender was selected among the Week 22 best XI after he scored for DC United in their 1-1 tie with Toronto FC and recently notched his first career assist, winning a header from a Lloyd Sam cross right into the path of Luciano Acosta for the game winner against the New England Revolution on August 26. He also marshaled DC’s defense when they garnered three straight victories in their bid to climb up the log. The Ghanaian is second in the league for headed shots (20) behind the US Men’s National Team’s all-time leading scorer, Clint Dempsey (23). “He’s a good defender and he’s good on set pieces. I think he has an understanding of the league now and how to go against some of the dynamic attacking players in MLS”, coach Olsen told dcunited.com. United’s coach added that “we’re looking for guys like Kofi [Opare] and younger guys to progress each year, get better and ultimately win starting spots. “The important thing for Kofi now is to take this spot and continue to develop into a good center back in this league,” Olsen concluded. http://ghsoccerus.net/news_ghanasoccer.php
