#kittydoggienews -- NYC's Animal Care Center is looking for fosters. Tens of thousands of pets come in to ACC each year. Often, they're too young to be placed in the shelter or have special needs that require a nurturing home environment. Foster parents provide a clean, safe, loving environment for homeless pets and help them prepare to find a new home. After receiving foster care, these pets are healthier and happier, which means they are well prepared to be adopted by a loving family.
Foster time periods are flexible, and whether you have a few days or a few weeks, you can make a difference. We supply everything, so no need to worry about kitty litter or food!
To become a foster, please email our friendly foster team at [email protected] for an appointment. You can also stop by our Manhattan Care Center at 326 E. 110th Street between 9 am and 5 pm any day of the week, or our Brooklyn Care Center at 2336 Linden Boulevard between 9 am and 5 pm Sunday through Thursday.

Speak up for the squirrels and birds. NYC is becoming a colder place to live. Damn! #urgent #kittydoggienews

Urgent: Limited Time to post comments against Proposed Park Rule prohibiting feeding wildlife including squirrels in Park's Property.

Please post comments on NYC Rules Link https://rules.cityofnewyork.us/content/prohibition-feeding-wildlife-parks

Our main objection is that this proposed rule is "starving squirrels and birds" since Parks doesn't plant nor provide food sources for them on Parks property. Ideally Parks should plant and provide natural food sources for our critters before they "ban feeding them" which is 'starving them" or forcing them to eat trash or leave the parks ground to forage on city streets.

Voters for Animal Rights

#kittydoggienews -- From #votersforanimalrights: 2019 NYC Public Advocate Special Election
VOTE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2019! Polls are open from 6:00AM – 9:00PM.
What does the Public Advocate do? They serve as an independent guardian for the rights of New Yorkers.
Why is the Public Advocate important for animals? They have the power to introduce and sponsor animal rights legislation. A great example of the importance of this position is former Public Advocate Leticia James who was instrumental in getting the City Council to pass legislation banning exotic animals from the circus.
Who are the animal-friendly candidates? Check out the candidates’ responses to our questionnaire HERE

(https://vfar.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Public-Advocate-Candidate-Responses-Voters-For-Animal-Rights.pdf?link_id=1&can_id=1d4b3283c87b37532fa18122d0ed618b&source=email-this-tuesday-special-election-for-nyc-public-advocate&email_referrer=email_496561&email_subject=this-tuesday-special-election-for-nyc-public-advocate)

and decide who you think is the best candidate for New York’s animals! We evaluated all candidates based on their responses to our questionnaire and support of our animal rights legislative agenda. We are proud that 8 of the 16 candidates pledged to support all of our priority issues. Those candidates are:
Former City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito
Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez
Council Member Jumaane Williams
Council Member Rafael Espinal
Assembly Member Danny O’Donnell
Assembly Member Michael Blake
State Committee Member Benjamin Yee
Professor David Eisenbach

We work to elect candidates who support animal protection, lobby for stronger laws to stop animal cruelty, and hold elected officials accountable to humane voters.

#kittydoggienews -- Pet owners in need of assistance encouraged to call ASPCA hotline: 1-800-738-9437

New York—At the request of NYC Emergency Management (NYCEM), the ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) is assisting the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) to provide much-needed resources for pet owners displaced by the devastating steam explosion that took place in the Flatiron district of Manhattan on July 19. The ASPCA and ACC are assisting emergency officials with assessments, coordinating services, and providing critical support at a NYCEM reception center to ensure displaced pet owners have essential supplies, including food and water, to care for their pets until they can return home.

“Even when every effort is made to prepare for emergency situations, there are times such as this when residents are forced to evacuate from their homes at a moment’s notice and rely on their community for critical resources to keep their families – including their pets – safe,” said Colleen Doherty, senior director of ASPCA Community Engagement. “The ASPCA is pleased to be in a position where we can assist NYC Emergency Management and the Animal Care Centers of NYC to ensure pet owners have critical resources to keep their pets safe.”

“Ensuring we can keep pets with their families as often as possible is a cornerstone of Animal Care Centers of NYC’s approach,” said Aurora Velasquez, Chief Operating Officer of ACC. “These families are in crisis already. By providing them with this type of support, ACC can help them have one less worry so they can concentrate on getting back on their feet as quickly as possible.”

Pet owners who were displaced by the steam explosion and require assistance for their pets can call the ASPCA hotline at 1-800-738-9437 for additional information and resources. (Source: ASPCA)

Tips for caring for your pets from a loud Fourth of July. #kittydoggienews

FIREWORKS can be scary for NYC pets!
• Take your dog for a walk before fireworks begin to tire him/her out and keep him/her calm when the explosions begin.
• Keep pets indoors when fireworks are underway. Close windows and curtains and run the air conditioner and television to block out noise and light flashes.
• Do not leave your pets home alone. Be there to comfort them. Create a comforting place for them — a box, crate, or cozy place to curl up.
• If you decide to go to an outdoor fireworks display, do not bring pets! They will be frightened by the noise and crowds, and they may escape and become lost.
• No matter what time of year, make sure your dogs and cats are microchipped, and that your dogs are licensed and wearing ID tags.
• If your pet becomes lost, immediately file a Lost Pet Report with Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC): http://bit.ly/ACCLostFound

#kittydoggienews -- A note from the #aspca.

Hello –

You’ve likely seen the tragic news about the dog who recently died after being placed in an overhead bin of a United Airlines flight from Houston to New York City.

While the ASPCA cannot comment on the recent specific incident, we would like to share crucial travel safety tips from Dr. Kristen Frank, Medical Director, ASPCA Animal Hospital, DVM, DACVIM.

Best Practices for Air Travel with a Pet

Pets in the cabin of an airplane should be contained in a well-ventilated carrier, which should never be placed in an overhead bin
Pets should have access to circulating air and to water; a toy, treat, or blanket may also help to keep them relaxed in transit
Pet owners should always consult with their pet’s veterinarian when considering travel to determine what is safe for the individual animal based on trip duration, age, species, breed, and other factors
Pet owners should travel with a pet kit containing any necessities, including proof of vaccinations
Medications should be given only on a case-by-case basis with veterinary approval
Check with individual airlines to discuss fees or restrictions such as those on carriers, breeds, or species
Always exercise caution and consider all available options when traveling with a pet
