Real and Natural Parenting

My mom had a lot of problems. She did not sleep and she felt exhausted. She was irritable, grumpy, and bitter. She was always sick, until one day, suddenly, she changed.

The situation was the same, but she was different.

One day my dad said to her:

- I've been looking for a job for three months and I haven't found anything, I'm going to have a few beers with friends.

My mom replied:
- It's okay.

My brother said to her:
- Mom, I'm doing poorly in all subjects at the University ...

My mom replied:
- Okay, you will recover, and if you don't, well, you repeat the semester, but you pay the tuition.

My sister said to her:
- Mom, I hit the car.

My mom replied:
- Okay daughter, take it to the workshop, find how to pay and while they fix it, get around by bus or subway.

Her daughter-in-law said to her:
- Mother-in-law, I come to spend a few months with you.

My mom replied:
- Okay, settle in the living room couch and look for some blankets in the closet.

All of us at my mom's house gathered worried to see these reactions.

We suspected that she had gone to the doctor and that she was prescribe some pills of "I don't give a damn about 1000 mg."

She would probably also be ingesting an overdose.

We then proposed to do an "intervention" to my mother to remove her from any possible addiction she had towards some anti-tantrum medication.

But what was not the surprise, when we all gathered around her and my mom explained:

"It took me a long time to realize that each person is responsible for their life, it took me years to discover that my anguish, my mortification, my depression, my courage, my insomnia and my stress, did not solve their problems but aggravated mine.

I am not responsible for the actions of others, but I am responsible for the reactions I express to that.

Therefore, I came to the conclusion that my duty to myself is to remain calm and let each one solve what corresponds to them.

I have taken courses in yoga, meditation, miracles, human development, mental hygiene, vibration and neurolinguistic programming, and in all of them, I found a common denominator: finally they all lead to the same point.

And, it is that I can only interfere with myself, you have all the necessary resources to solve your own lives.

I can only give you my advice if you ask me and it depends on you to follow it or not.

So, from now on, I cease to be: the receptacle of your responsibilities, the sack of your guilt, the laundress of your remorse, the advocate of your faults, the wall of your lamentations, the depositary of your duties, who should solve your problems or spare a tire every time to fulfill your responsibilities.
From now on, I declare all independent and self-sufficient adults.

Everyone at my mom's house was speechless.

From that day on, the family began to function better, because everyone in the house knows exactly what it is that they need to do.

Just finished the first draft of the half hour pilot of Hot Angry Mom...or whatever it will be called! Super grateful to Veronica Rodriguez, my Sundance mentor, for her precise notes and incredible encouragement. I know I still have a long way to go, but I’m thrilled to have a structure that’s solid and dozens of hilarious moments and a ton of heart in this draft. #femalefilmmaker #creator #writer #womenincomedy #hotangrymom #sundancecollab #sundance #nycactor #nycmom #momlife #angrymom #angerstories

I want to thank everyone for your immense outpouring of personal stories and support for one another after last week’s speech on the violence of misogyny and abuse of power in the workplace. I figured I’d share some behind-the-scenes details of what went into that moment.
.
Many have asked me if my speech was pre-written. The answer is no. But in some ways, yes. Yes because this speech was a recounting of thoughts that so many women and femme people have carried since the time we were children. It flowed because every single one of us has lived this silent script: stay silent (why?), keep your head down (for whom?), suck it up (to whose benefit?). But my chosen words were largely extemporaneous. I got to the House floor about ten minutes before my speech and scribbled down some quick notes after reflecting on what had transpired over the last few days. Pictured here are all the notes I had, and from there I improvised my composition and spoke live.
.
The evening before my speech, I did not know what I was going to say. I wrestled with this question: what is there to say to a man who isn’t listening? I couldn’t come up with much, because frankly I didn’t want to diminish myself or waste my breath. It was then that I decided if I couldn’t get through to him, perhaps I could speak directly to the culture, people, and institutions responsible for creating and protecting this violence and violent language.
.
I also reflected on MY role in all of this - to me, this speech was about holding myself accountable as much as anyone else. Because my first instinct was to let it go. It was my second instinct, too. It was only when sisters like @ayannapressley, @rashidatlaib, @repilhan and friends like @repraskin reminded me how unacceptable this all was that I started to think about what I would have done if this abuse happened to any other person BUT me. That is when I found my voice. Why is it okay to swallow our own abuse, yet stand up for others? I needed to learn that by standing up for ourselves, we break the chain of abuse and stand up for every person after us who would have been subject to more of the same with lack of accountability

The Poison of Male Incivility

“As we read commentators tell the story of women’s ambition and savvy and drive, all of which are surely politically animating forces — as they have been for all the many men who have preceded them in American politics — I hope people can remember that the analysis is not wrong, exactly, but that it is woefully incomplete. Because until we can see how white men have taken advantage of sexism and racism for their own gain — how they’ve built their own “brand,” the American brand — on the backs of the f**king bitches forever, we’re not really reading a full story.”

When a woman dares respond to it, she’s seen as “disruptive.”

So now we’re done with men explaining that they can’t be sexist because they have daughters. Or that they care about women’s rights because they have a wife or sister. Now men can just understand once and for all that they should care about women not because a couple belong to them (quite centering, no?) but because women’s rights are human rights- and all decent members of the human race stand for equality.

PS. Also, real quick- Stop using the women related to you as shields when you go into battle with other women. We see through that strategy. It’s gross.

THANK YOU @aoc

Coronavirus Is Killing the Working Mother

“But such progress is dependent on “how we, as a society, respond to this crisis,” by which she means implementing family-friendly policies such as paid leave, decreasing the wage gap, and providing universal health care. “Sometimes there comes a crack in time,” Koontz says, quoting a line from a poem by Stephen Vincent Benet. “This is a real crack in time that exposes where the roads have been blocked, where they’ve been overgrown, where new things need to be built. They’re terribly painful, these cracks in time, but they can lead to change.” But that assumes that everyone, from policymakers to media figures, sees these roadblocks as roadblocks to begin with, and until more people let loose with that primal scream calling for massive change, then these cracks in time will likely be left ignored.”

It was hard enough to “have it all” before — but the pandemic could force out a generation of moms out of the workforce

What are you doing for the 4th? Our family is joining “Confronting July 4th : A March to Honor Black and Indigenous Activists.”

We are having a protest march in the afternoon and afterwards at the Prospect Park Bandshell a celebration/rally.

This event is being organized by a coalition of lesbian and queer activists plus filmmakers and historians who want to honor you. July 4th is full of contradictions that distort the meaning of freedom, liberation, justice and humanity. We want to give those involved in organizing and participating in marches for the past several weeks, months, and years, a venue for community where they can just show up.

We will march at 3 p.m. sharp, gathering at Fort Greene Park (at Willoughby Avenue), march to the Prospect Park Bandshell, where we will have speakers, performers and DJs.

Join us for the March, at the Bandshell, or both. It’s YOUR day!

Schedule:
[email protected] 2:30pm: Ft. Greene Park @ Willoughby Ave (btwn Myrtle & Dekalb)
Rally @ 5:00pm: Prospect Park Bandshell (Speakers, Performers, Dj's!)

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that there would be no America without stolen land and stolen people. That this fight for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness didn’t start with the murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, but it began when the first ships invaded these shores.

That we can no longer celebrate our country without reckoning with our past and present. That this country is founded on the genocide of Indigenous nations, the theft of their land, and the enslavement of African peoples.

That the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness brand that America markets is a dangerous myth as we continue to oppress, dehumanize, and murder. That unless we all commit to fight for the lives and rights of Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other marginalized peoples, we will all continue to suffer the violence of systemic racism and white supremacy.

That is why this 4th of July we refuse to celebrate the whitewashing of this country. Instead, we will joyously and actively celebrate and honor the ancestors and activists who have and continued to fight.

It’s been nearly six years since 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot to death by a white Cleveland police officer while playing with a toy gun in the park with his sister. Timothy Loehmann, the officer who murdered this child within seconds of arriving at the scene, was fired two and a half years later, not for the shooting, but for lying on his job application. Tamir should be turning 18 today, but his life was violently ended at the hands of police. I drew this piece to honor his memory.

.
From the @tamirricefoundation: “Tamir Rice was born on June 25, 2002 in Cleveland, Ohio, the youngest of four children. Tamir loved to be with his brothers and sisters, and had a smile that would brighten any room. Tamir also loved the arts. The process of creative self-expression brought him joy.”
