This is actually manganese dendrites on chert! True plant fossils are preserved in dark carbon films. This mineral growth mimics fern patterns, which is why it’s an easy trickster! 😉

See all those little holes and ring shapes in this rock? That’s a whole garden of crinoids – fossilized ‘sea lilies’ that lived on the ocean floor here around 330–350 million years ago, when Arkansas was under a warm, shallow sea. Crinoids are cousins of starfish and sand dollars, but instead of crawling around they anchored themselves with a stem and waved feathery arms through the water to catch food drifting by. Most of the time we only find broken stems and little donut-shaped pieces, so a chunky specimen like this is what we in the rockhounding community call “Fossil Soup”!

I’d love you guys to flood my comments with fossil soup finds of your own! 👇🏼
