😭😭😭Court Awards Student US$750,500 in Damages Over School Injury

A Civil Law Court jury has awarded US$750,500 in damages to Richard Gbai Jr., a senior student of J.J. Roberts United Methodist School, after ruling in his favor in a lawsuit stemming from an incident that occurred in December 2024.

According to the case, Gbai alleged that Assistant Dean of Students Dolo Mulbah struck him in the left eye with a wooden stick during a school election, causing permanent damage to his vision. Although he underwent surgery, he reportedly continues to suffer from blurred vision and other complications, which he said prevented him from taking part in important school activities, including his graduation.

The court awarded:

General damages: US$400,000

Punitive damages: US$350,000

Special damages: US$500

Total Award: US$750,500

At an exchange rate of L$184 to US$1, the total award is equivalent to:

L$138,092,000 (One hundred thirty eight million, ninety two thousand Liberian dollars).

The ruling has renewed public discussion about student safety, accountability, and discipline in Liberia's schools.
