When I first started learning about the Orishas, I fell down a rabbit hole I never climbed back out of. Every name led to three more names. Every story led to a story behind that story. I remember finding out about Olokun for the first time and just sitting with it for days.

Ten more of the 401 today. Have you heard of any of these before this post?

If this is your first time meeting even one of them, that feeling you have right now, that’s the same one I had. It doesn’t go away. It just gets deeper the more you learn.

If you’d rather not guess at it, a proper cleansing bath is something I prepare for people, and it’s the first thing I reach for when someone comes to me weighed down. But start where you can. Even water and intention will move something.

That is why, to this day, Erinle does not speak for himself. When you come to him, Yemaya answers. His voice lives in her mouth.
Save this one so you remember the story behind the silence. And tell me in the comments, was Yemaya protecting her secrets, or breaking his heart? I don’t think there’s a clean answer, and I want to hear yours.

Yemoja?
Yemanja?
Iemanjá?
Yemalla?

One Orisha. Many languages. Many lineages. Many histories.

I’m always fascinated by the conversations people have around “the correct spelling.” Is it about pronunciation? Tradition? The specific lineage you’re initiated into? Colonial language influences? Respect for the original Yoruba? Or something else entirely?
