One of Europe’s most fascinating military stories comes from the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, when Liechtenstein mobilized its tiny army for the last time.
The principality sent just 80 soldiers to guard a strategic mountain pass along the Austrian-Italian border. Remarkably, the unit never saw combat and did not fire a single shot throughout the mission.
When the deployment ended, all 80 soldiers returned home safely. According to a popular legend, they actually came back with 81 men after befriending an officer or companion who joined them on the journey home.
Whether the famous “81st man” tale is entirely true remains a matter of debate among historians. What is certain is that Liechtenstein suffered no casualties during the expedition.
The story has endured for generations as a rare reminder that even in times of war, friendship can sometimes become the most memorable outcome.
