Hot Wood Arts

Hot Wood Arts Arts space with 16 private artists studios, performance space, music studio, and a gallery containing 20 resident artists. Stay tuned for updates.

They were devestated by the September 17/18th fire, and still figuring out their next steps. Hot Wood Arts is an arts space that was developed to encourage collaboration, inspiration, and friendship in an urban environment. It houses seventeen resident artists’ studios, a gallery and a stage for performances. In 2010 we began as a series of pop-up shows featuring visual and performing artists. Our

Red Hook facility opened in 2012. The Center is a 7,000-square-foot space inside the Civil-War-era Beard Street Warehouse building in Red Hook, Brooklyn. It contains 16 artist work spaces, a shared work area with wood shop, an art gallery, and a stage for performances. One-year leases are granted to 16 artist tenants, who are known as the facility's “residents” and receive, in addition to 24 hour access to their work spaces, a number of other benefits including free wi-fi, electricity, use of common areas and tools, permanent links to their personal websites from the Hot Wood Arts website, and constant exposure to viewers. Each work space is fitted with a glass door, so tenants can curate the visible portion of their studios as they see fit, as if they had an ongoing, year-round gallery show. During gallery shows, the facility is open to the public from 1:00 – 6:00 on Saturday and Sunday (by appointment at all other times) and during any gallery opening or performance events, and residents will be encouraged to continually display their work. Residents keep 100% of revenue from any sales unless the work being sold is curated in a Hot Wood Gallery show. *our gallery is currently closed due to Covid. The Hot Wood Gallery is curated by Megan Suttles, and focuses mostly on non-resident artists, although residents are considered if their work fits the theme of the show. Each show has an opening event featuring a musical performance in keeping with the show's theme. *our gallery is currently closed due to Covid.

This guy NEVER lets me put pictures of him on the internet. Today was the day! Somehow I convinced him that these videos were Instagram savvy.

Update: Hot Wood is still searching for a new home. We hope to have good news sooner than later.

Right now, we have storage units full of stuff covered in soot, ash, and mold—things that are too toxic to ever be indoors again. We’re slowly working our way through it all and getting rid of what can’t be saved.

And then we have storage units filled with donations from the kindest humans on the planet. ❤️

It’s a strange mix of loss and generosity, and we’re incredibly grateful for the people who continue to believe in Hot Wood and help us rebuild. More updates soon.

Xo- Megan
