Socialist Revolution - IMT Join the IMT and fight against war, racism, poverty, misery, and their root cause: capitalism! For a mass socialist party of the working class!

Socialist Revolution (a publication of Wellred IMT)

Mission: Build a mass socialist party of the working class! Break with the Democrats and Republicans! In the final analysis, only organized labor has the numbers and resources to effectively challenge the bosses’ parties. Such a party must be armed with a class independent, socialist program that breaks with capitalism. By mobilizing the working class majority at the workplace, in the unions, on the streets, and at the polls, we can fight and win against the bosses. The right for all workers to strike and belong to a union Repeal all antiunion laws including Taft-Hartley. End compulsory arbitration and the victimization of trade unionists and those forming new unions. Organize the unorganized. No to concessions and give-backs! All union officials should be regularly elected with the right of immediate recall by the membership, and receive no more than the average wage of a skilled worker. End unemployment—quality jobs for all For a national minimum wage of at least $25 per hour. Thirty hours work for forty hours pay. The right to a secure, full-time job, full benefits, or a place in education for all, including temp workers and interns. No to layoffs. For a massive program of useful public works to create quality union jobs to rebuild our infrastructure. Wages to be tied to inflation through periodic Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). For union control over hiring and firing. Establish union-controlled job training and hiring halls in neighborhoods with high unemployment. Voluntary retirement at age 55 with full benefits. Raise Social Security benefits and stop privatization. Quality, affordable housing for all End the capitalist housing market, which leads to gentrification and homelessness. For an immediate moratorium on evictions, with residents of foreclosed properties allowed to stay in their homes. For the nationalization of foreclosed and vacant homes, to be allocated to those in need under democratic public control. No compensation to the foreclosing owners, except in cases of proven need. Rent for all housing, including Section 8 and government-owned housing, to be fixed at not more than 10 percent of wages, as part of a voluntary, socialized plan for housing. Universal, quality health care For a socialized, national health care system. Nationalize the health insurance companies, the medical equipment and pharmaceutical industries, the mega-hospital systems and related clinics, and integrate them into a single state-owned and democratically managed and administered health provider. Full access for all to the latest medical technology, treatments, and discoveries. Free scientific research from the profit motive. Massively fund research to eradicate AIDS, cancer, and other diseases. Quality education for all Abolish tuition fees and forgive student loans. Provide living grants and paid internships to all students. Nationalize the private universities and colleges and merge them into one united public system of higher education. Fully fund and expand our public schools, colleges, and universities. End corporate encroachment into the classroom. No to means testing, vouchers, charter schools, and privatization. No to “Race to the Top” and “No Child Left Behind.” For lifelong learning for all from the cradle to the grave. A socialized plan of production for agriculture Nationalize the food distribution and agrichemical giants that endanger public health in the pursuit of profit. A democratic plan of food production would protect small farmers’ and agricultural workers’ jobs and security. Fully fund nutrition assistance and extension programs. Full union rights for all agricultural workers. Action to protect the environment For public ownership and control over natural resources—the land, major industries, mining, and logging companies, transport, oil, gas, and other energy—to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all. Paid retraining and guaranteed employment for displaced workers. Environmental plans should be measured in generations, not fiscal quarters. Free, expanded, and efficient public transportation for all. Fight against all forms of discrimination—equal rights for all Equal pay for work of equal value. Full paid leave for expectant mothers after the 1st trimester; parental leave with full pay for up to two years after birth or adoption. Free and safe, quality after-school programs and childcare facilities in or near the workplace. Affordable public laundry services and subsidized restaurants serving healthy, quality food to help free working women from domestic servitude. Full reproductive rights up to and including abortion. No to discrimination on the basis of sexual preference, gender identity, or expression. Defend our civil liberties from attacks in the name of the “war on terror.” For genuine freedom of expression. Nationalize the means of communication and democratize access to the media and the use of public meeting spaces on the basis of proportional representation. For the unity of the working class! An injury to one is an injury to all! Mobilize the labor movement to combat racism, discrimination, police brutality, and mass incarceration. End the phony war on drugs in the US and internationally. Abolish the death penalty and release all political prisoners. For the immediate and unconditional legalization of all undocumented immigrants. Full rights and amnesty for immigrant workers and their families. End all racist immigration and asylum controls. For the right of residency and dual citizenship. For the right to speak one’s own language. Access to Social Security with equal benefits for all. No to temporary “guest worker” programs. For family reunification and an immediate end to raids and deportations. No to border walls, militarization, and repression. Reparations for centuries of exploitation, racism, and oppression can only be achieved by ending capitalism and building socialism. Nationalize the key levers of the economy: the major industries, banks, and corporations No to austerity—make the rich pay for the crisis! Break with the irrational chaos of the capitalist free market. Nationalize the Fortune 500. No compensation to the millionaires, only to those in genuine need. All nationalized companies to be run under democratic workers’ control and management, integrated into a socialist plan of production to meet the needs of society. Consolidate the nationalized banks into a single, publicly owned and administered bank to protect workers’ savings and guarantee affordable loans to all. Socialist internationalism and world revolution End NAFTA, TPP and other imperialist trade and banker’s agreements. Abolish the UN, NATO, WTO, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund and write off the debts imposed by Wall Street and imperialism. For international economic cooperation based on the interests of the workers of the world, not a handful of multinationals. No to the war on workers and the poor at home and abroad. Cut the military budget and invest instead in social needs. No to militarism and intervention in the Middle East and around the world. Unite with Canadian and Latin American workers in a socialist federation of the Americas as part of a world socialist federation.

US Warmongering as Trump Plays with Fire in the Middle East

Sparks have been flying recently between the US government and the Iranian regime. Last night, US president Trump ordered missile strikes on Iran, but then abruptly cancelled them. The incident was the peak (to this point) of weeks of tensions between the two governments.

No to war with Iran!
Down with US imperialism!
Down with capitalism!

Last night, Trump ordered missile strikes on Iran, but then abruptly cancelled them. This came after Iran shot down a US military drone.

Hong Kong Protests Force Extradition Bill Suspension

Only a week after the last, million-strong march that took place in Hong Kong, a second mass protest erupted on June 16. This demonstration of 2 million took place in spite of the suspension of the extradition bill the day before

The demand for a general strike continues to be popular, and now the movement is going from simply demanding the retraction of the extradition bill to the resignation of Carrie Lam as Chief Executive. As we have seen in many cases around the world, the logic of events is impelling a defensive movement by the masses to go onto the offensive.

In spite of the government issuing public apologies and suspending the bill, a new mass protest erupted on June 16. The movement must go forward!

How to Fight Alabama’s Reactionary Abortion Law

Alabama’s governor, Kay Ivey, has signed the "Human Life Protection Act" into law. This is a draconian law that dramatically infringes upon the basic reproductive rights of women. With this law in effect, all abortions, even in cases of incest or rape, are entirely illegal. Any doctor caught carrying out an abortion can receive a life imprisonment.

A wave of outrage has swept the country as millions are disgusted by this barbaric attack on women.

The Campus Crisis of Mental Health

In recent years, discussions about mental health have become commonplace. As this issue loses its stigma, it is increasingly pushed into the public discourse by objective factors such as America’s increasing number of suicides and the increase of major depressive episodes among youth.

In the absence of a materialist, class perspective of the broad factors that give rise to mental illness in students, the fight against this crisis is inevitably channelled into individualist avenues that address the symptoms but not the roots of the problem.

Without a materialist, class perspective of the factors that give rise to mental illness in students, the roots of the problem cannot be addressed.

From Algeria to Sudan, powerful movements are spreading!
#IamTheSudanRevolution

From Algeria to Sudan, powerful movements are spreading.

The Sudanese Revolution has been an inspiration to workers, women and youth around the world. The women in particular have revealed tremendous revolutionary potential.

The counter-revolution has been manoeuvring to try and create a situation of apparent breakdown in social order, using criminal gangs pretending to be revolutionaries.

The number of casualties at the hands of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in Sudan, after they clamped down on the protests last week, has reached 113, with 70 rapes taking place.

If the people at the top who ordered this butchery thought it would quell the revolt of the Sudanese people, they clearly miscalculated.

The Sudanese masses have shown unmatched levels of power, determination and imagination, what is needed is to focus this power on the key tasks of the revolution: the complete overthrow of the old regime, along with all of its militias and the armed forces, and breaking its grip on the economy.

The task of the Sudanese Revolution is to break with the capitalist system, whose crisis led directly to the spark that lit the flame of the current revolutionary movement. Only the Sudanese workers can forge this new future. They must sweep away the relics of past regimes and take their destiny into their own hands.

Down with the Junta!

Down with Hemeti and the RSF!

Long live the general strike!

For a revolutionary insurrection to take down the TMC and the rest of the rotten Sudanese capitalist regime!

Ilhan Omar and AIPAC: Why We Need Class Politics

Ilhan Omar's statements on the influence of pro-Israel lobbyists on Congress have led to accusations of anti-Semitism, while her remarks on the suppression of civil liberties after 9/11 have led to death threats from the far-right fringe. While Marxists do not support the Democratic Party—including allegedly “progressive” Democrats like Ilhan who say their goal is to reform this capitalist party—the controversy nevertheless provides us with an opportunity to state our positions on a number of issues, including the nature of the Israel/Palestine conflict and the oppression of Muslims within the United States.

The Minnesota congresswoman has been at the center of controversy in the media as part of their usual method of diverting attention from the real issues that affect the working class.

US and Chinese Tech Capitalists Versus Tech Workers

Recently a shared project documenting the workplace abuses of managers in Chinese tech companies has become popular on the code sharing platform Github, owned by Microsoft. These firms include Alibaba, JD.com, and ByteDance, which have recently come under scrutiny due to their institution of “996” working hours, whereby workers are expected to work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., 6 days per week. The Github project is titled “996.icu,” a reference to the likelihood of this schedule ending with workers visiting the intensive care unit. Tech workers in US should support their class siblings in China and fight for civilized working conditions and the equitable and responsible development of technology. This means joining the fight for socialism.

While it is still the most powerful imperialist force on earth, on every sphere the era of unquestioned US dominance is over.

American Marxists Strategize for Socialism in Our Lifetime

The vast expanse of the United States makes it difficult for any group to organize national events. But long drives and expensive flights could not deter nearly 100 comrades and contacts from attending this year’s National School, the US IMT’s largest event to date. Comrades from 18 US states, a delegation from Edmonton, Canada, and Fred Weston from the UK met in Pittsburgh to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the Third (Communist) International, the most impressive revolutionary organization humanity has ever known.

Bolshevism or Hal Draper’s “Anatomy of a Microsect”?

The question of how socialists can find a road to the mass of the working class is being debated by growing numbers of workers and youth who have recently been awakened to socialism and Marxism. With so many variants to choose from—from “non-reformist” reformers and non-reform reformists to Maoist cosplayers and “soft-Trots,” what is the way forward?

How can socialists find a road to the working class? This question is being debated by growing numbers of workers and youth.

Is Social Media to Blame for Polarization?

An aspect of social life that has only recently emerged is chosen to serve as the scapegoat for the problems of capitalism. We are compelled to ask: How did political polarization arise before the internet? Is the internet the first medium to allow for misinformation? What is driving people to be so adamant about their beliefs on the internet? Most importantly, where do these ideas spring from in the first place?

Desperately seeking an explanation, an aspect of social life that has only recently emerged is chosen to serve as the scapegoat for the problems of capitalism.

Should Socialists Be Preparing for Revolution?

For those who can see that the historical pendulum promises an eventual resurgence of the labor movement, the strategic question is: what needs to be in place for a future revolution to succeed?

For this it is indispensable to return to the lessons of Bolshevism, as so many socialists are doing today.

The historical pendulum promises an eventual resurgence of the labor movement. The strategic question is: what needs to be in place for a future revolution to succeed?

Happy birthday, Karl Marx!

201 years ago, a child was born whose very name would cause the world’s ruling classes to tremble at a communistic revolution. And yet, despite their century-long efforts to discredit, mock, and distort him, Karl Marx’s specter continues to haunt them.

The International Marxist Tendency is committed to fighting alongside the working class to finish the work started by Marx and Engels.

Religious Fundamentalism: Why Is it Growing and What Is the Alternative?

However, while the more traditional Christian denominations have been in decline, fundamentalist churches have been growing. Thus, while overall church attendance in North America and Europe has been going down over a long period, within this decline, the fundamentalist Christian fringe has been growing. It is also the case that, in less developed parts of the world, where life is far more difficult and poverty is widespread (for instance Latin America and Africa) religious practice is on the rise. How does one explain all this?

The old established Churches are in decline, while new fundamentalist churches are emerging and growing. How can we explain this?

The Role of Trotskyists in the 1934 Minneapolis Teamsters’ Strike

From May to August of 1934, Minneapolis was rocked by a strike that would forever change the course of US labor history. This was the strike of Teamsters Local 574, a union led by Trotskyists. The strike’s greatest conquest was in laying the foundations for industrial unionism in North America, leading to the formation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in the following years. Above all, the Minneapolis Strike demonstrated the role played by the young forces of American Trotskyism in obtaining gains for workers.
