Grapple Media Do you trust what you're reading online? Most news consumers don't anymore. Grapple will create a map showing where your news originated.
(2)

What is Grapple? Is your news fake or not? The answer to that question is rarely yes or no. Ask any grade schooler snubbed by a dirty rumor, the quality of information depends on its source. Grapple is a web application designed to put readers in the driver’s seat when it comes to news sources. The application will accompany online news articles and graphically display the origin of different sources within each article to their origin. How does Grapple work? Grapple uses algorithms to trace source material connected to any story published online. It will identify the origin of sources cited in a story and their connection to other stories online, providing an live diagram. The source tree will show readers exactly how any online story travelled across the web, from its point of origin to their computer screen. Where will consumers find Grapple? Grapple will be available as a plugin application that can be installed on web browsers and social media platforms. The plugin will source-tag articles in real time and create a graphic source chart and source quality score that can be accessed through an icon in the browser window. That graphic will provide a link to more extensive information available through the Grapple website or mobile application. What additional information will the app provide? In addition to linking sources through a graphic source diagram, Grapple.com will display disputed and corroborating news sources and will also provide analysis of any root source news reports for quality or potential problem sports. It will highlight potential flags in the original report including use of anonymous sources, secondary sources and uncited information. Will Grapple provide original content? Grapple’s homepage will track trending news stories shared on the most trafficked social media platforms. It will provide a map of all platforms on which a given story is being shared or cited. Grapple will not take an editorial stance on stories, but may produce reports that analyze developing news stories and highlight discrepancies in reportage among various news outlets. Will Grapple be free? The Grapple plugin and app will be free upon launch. The Grapple.com web platform and mobile app will use a traffic-based advertising revenue model.

Matt Lauer and the Decline of Media Authority

I spy with my little eye a reality gap: "a full 80% see sexual harassment as either a somewhat serious or very serious problem in the United States...But when asked about sexual harassment in the places they have worked, just 36% call it a somewhat serious or very serious problem."

Add to problems of bias and technology new questions of morality.

Newsonomics: A call to arms (and wallets) in the new era of deregulation and bigger media

Ken Doctor asks "in 2017, we’re up to competing realities. What about 2027?" I would argue that realities are always competing; many of the journalists that used to reconcile those realities are increasingly unemployed and/or relegated to the fringes of the internet.

First Sinclair and now the Kochs are back. In an age of media free-for-all and massive deregulation, will fact-based journalism become an endangered species?

Fake News and Partisan Blowhards Were Invented in the 1800s

Great article on the history of news and "fake news" -- "Social platforms organize their users around particular identities or interests to maximize engagement, fracturing the media into tiny, often unrecognizable pieces." ... We are building software to make these pieces whole again.

Thomas Jefferson was looking for someone to write a hit piece. It was July 1793, just months after the U.S. declared neutrality in a war between Britain and France. The then-Secretary of State wanted a writer—or better yet, an entire publication—to criticize the government’s decision and respond to…
