Rust Bucket is heading back to where it all began! We're excited to share that a Snowday Original directed by Roddy Hyduk and Morgan Rae Wynne has been selected to screen at Edmonton International Film Festival — an Oscar-qualifying festival for short films in Edmonton, Alberta. Rust Bucket is a little film that follows a Canadian artist and his unlikely canvas (🚂). We wish we could see it on the big screen! The New Snowday

We’ve been reflecting a lot about where we are today, and imagining where we can go tomorrow. And with that, for the first time since it all started in 2014, we have a new look! The new Snowday is more playful than ever and embodies a sense of creative freedom that only comes from a day that’s open for the making.

We’re also adopting a new brand color, Video Blue. Inspired by the days of home videotape playback, this color serves as a reminder that something memorable is about to unfold. And we’re counting on that continuing to happen for a very long time.

#BlackLivesMatter. Justice for #GeorgeFloyd, #BreonnaTaylor, #AhmaudArbery, and countless others — it’s important we say their names because racism and white supremacy are very much alive in this country.

We stand with the Black community and demand change and accountability. In the immediate, Snowday is making a donation to Black Lives Matter. In the long term, we’re voting + working to be better advocates for change within our community and beyond. And you should too.

Telling stories using UGC material filmed by a variety of people is a great way to tap into today’s production possibilities — this style of content can be produced & directed in a remote capacity to serve as a backbone for all types of concept- or product-driven stories!

Back in March, our team began a practice in gratitude as a means of staying optimistic through the pandemic. We extended an invitation to the Snowday community across the country to submit audio visual responses within a creative framework we created. The results were compiled into a short film — a moment of reflection on what it means to be alive at this very moment. Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/e9NfFbU

Did you know that American research universities played a key role in the invention of the smartphone, plastic, and polio vaccine? We sure didn’t, but after diving into a brief from our friends at The Association of American Universities, we were ready to spread the word. We took an epic story of historical and technological transformation and boiled it all down to a minute and thirty seconds. Special thanks to FDR.

University of Michigan: "Always Leading"

After 200 years, University of Michigan was ready for a PSA that broke the mold. Swerving away from the traditional PSA model, we dove deep into our alma mater’s history in search of its guiding ideal: public service. After building the creative direction from the ground up, we sifted through years of photographic archives that capture the spirit of the modern campus. The spot, tied together by the voices of notable Wolverines from every field, aired on national television and was shared online for audiences of millions.

In this difficult time, we’re thankful for the safety and well-being of our team, friends, and families. We’re also thankful to be able to keep doing what we love with our partners: working hand-in-hand together to share meaningful stories. http://snowday.studio/

Students around the world are now learning from home. This adjustment is a new challenge for students, educators, parents, and guardians alike.

Earlier this year, we partnered with the Google for Education team and three incredible teachers to make a 12-part video series that highlights a variety of accessibility features that can be used to customize students’ learning experiences. Head to the Google Blog to learn more about accessibility tools for distance learning during COVID-19.

Instant Chinese

To most western eyes, the written Chinese language is simply an aesthetic — beautiful and iconic, but otherwise obscured by cultural and linguistic distance. As speakers (and enthusiasts) of the Chinese language, Snowday's animation team And-Orange Motion Design wanted to highlight the unique way that Chinese characters contain meaning. They set out to offer viewers the thrill of taking a first step into the world of the Chinese language, using the visual qualities of 汉字 as a tool.

We're super excited to share &Orange's newest work, Instant Chinese!
