Modern Trigger

New EP from Modern Trigger is out now!

Basement Punx grooves through the self-doubt and anxiety you’re probably used to hearing me go on about, except that there’s a very hopeful part right where the music takes sort of an uplifting turn. Whether or not in ends with that feeling or a depraved and self-deprecating sarcasm, I’ll leave up to you. (oooh which is it which is it.)

Trigger Warning is weird to me and I was worried about showing it to people because it is not quite as introspective as the rest of our music. It is still very much focused on personal feelings, but they are more reactionary to something outside of myself, namely people and bands that pretend to be something they are not because it is trendy or popular. While I don’t claim to have the authority or ability to know or tell anyone what they are or what they are not, and always try to respect anyone’s wishes to meet, support, and accept them right where they’re at; sometimes I make judgements and sometimes those judgements p**s me off and “this bed that I’ve made screams of asylum.” (yeah I just quoted myself so what.)

Bus Stops is an old song I wrote when playing with The Crick and it always seemed to have stuck with all the people I’ve met at shows over the years and I hope it’s a funny ‘f**k yeah’ moment for everyone that I’ve known since then. (Plus Jesse hits the drums really hard whenever we play it so f**k yeah.)

Happy Trails, Bozo might be the most personal and comprehensive thing I ever made and I love hearing it and playing it. It gets its name from Jesse and Ken getting rowdy at a show before our set and shouting the subtitles from whatever was playing on tv behind the bar. It’s also about friends that die, or those that might as well have, or the words shared with them that stuck with me forever but no one else seems to remember, or bad advice from grandma. It’s our humor, our pain, our contradiction, and our hope. Creative stuff is really extraordinary when it’s about everything, and for me this song is.

The James Rocket

This week we have a great chat with James of The James Rocket, about danelectro guitars, guided by voices, and rocking western MA in the 90s. Unfortunately, due to some technical difficulties, things could sound a bit better this episode - but with all 3 of us idolizing Robert Pollard, we are actually OK with it.

Check out The James Rocket on May 7th at Hanks Saloon in Brooklyn, and The Local NYC in Queens on the 21st.
