Summer Reading List 2019

Warm hello! I was out of pocket for a family wedding then Monday/Tuesday called in frizzy (anyone in New York knows exactly what I mean).

It's officially summer so here's this year's summer reading list. Summer viewing is season 2 of Big Little Lies - can't get enough of Meryl Streep chewing up the Monterey Bay scenery - and Years and Years which debuted Monday on HBO and I recommend watching before the debates (thank you Kerry Muzzey for the tip on this one!)

Let me know what you're reading and watching!

I first got into summer reading lists in high school. Back then the lists were assigned and geared towards prepping for the SAT and AP exams. I still remember – vividly – reading Oedipus Rex by Sophocles and Henry David Thoreau’s Walden during my AFS summer in Tunisia between my junior and sen...

Advice for Longevity From 73-Year-Old Tony Winner and Footwear Tastemaker André De Shields

In case you missed it last night...the heart-singing, uplifting, joy-making moment we all need right now - André DeShields' Tony win at 73 years old and his generous wisdom:

1. Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming.
2. Slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be.
3. The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next, so keep climbing.

You can trust a man wearing shoes like these.

It's graduation season...and I'm reposting this address from Newhouse/Syracuse Professor Les Rose completely without permission (via Poynter)...because it's timeless advice and you don't have to be in journalism to find value in his comments.
Know your custodian’s name. They work a helluva lot harder than you ever will.
Learn to select the best sandwich that will not fall apart as you drive. Also, consider iced coffee
over hot. There are bumps in the road.
If someone takes the time to give you advice, even if you already know 99% of it, listen politely. That 1% revelation could change your career.
Whoever drives The Live Truck gets to pick the radio station. This is the law.
Think what it is like to be the other, the person not like you. And suddenly your story is better.
Don’t like the look of your live shots? Write faster. There will then be time for proper lighting!
Share the glory with the news director who made your story possible. Assignment desk. Photographer. The tech who brought in your live shot signal.
Be kind to interns, and help them whenever you can. You know, pay it forward.
Don’t gossip in the newsroom, unless it involves ownership change.
Make mediocre and dull stories the best they can be. This is how you get better. Pretty simple.
And when you are lucky enough to have a hard-working TV news photojournalist as your partner, for God’s sake carry the tripod. And buy lunch every now and then!
Got 90 seconds for your story? Come in at 1:20. Your producer will love you, and payback time is when you have a really great story and you need more time.
Anybody with the last name “Kardashian” is not news. Ever.
There is nothing “real” in reality TV.
You are Real News. That said, we must daily rebuild the trust of the people.
The mayor is fair game. His wife and especially children are (almost always) NOT.
You will make friends in the darndest places: news subjects, folks at other stations and police.
Ladies (and gents), do not marry the local cop. Listen to me! They say hello to you at a three-car wreck at 4 a.m. They ask you out to breakfast (Denny’s). You fall for them. Boom! You are now stuck forever in that starter market. Establish EARLY that you are moving two years into your three-year contract. Do this before you finish your pancakes. Or sooner.
Always remember: journalism, and journalists, matter. It is the First Amendment for a reason. Dictators that take over a country shut us down first.
There has never been a famine in a country with a free press, because journalists will find out where the food is.
Never forget how many journalist have been killed, captured, or tortured for simply telling
truths. Respect their memory.
From my teaching partner Bob Dotson: Find hope. Report hope.
Les Rose spent 38 years in broadcast journalism, including 22 years with CBS National News Network as a photojournalist and field producer. He spent seven years working with CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman on the series “Everybody Has a Story.” He is a professor of practice at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Broadcast and Digital Journalism Department, at Syracuse University. On Thursday, he’ll lead Storytelling with Les Rose: Tips, Tricks and True Tales. Yasmin Vossoughian: How I learned to stop worrying and love my giant purple birthmark

All sorts of things prevent us from pursuing our dreams. This essay by Yasmin Voussoughian is all kinds of inspiring: For the last 40 years, I’ve been learning to accept myself, appreciate what I have and honor what makes me different. But some days are harder than others...

"So often, as women, we base our self-worth on others. But, to be most comfortable in your own skin is to accept yourself, to like yourself," says the MSNBC anchor.

#NOWCASTING: National HOST SEARCH for a KIDS + FAMILY Escape Room show from Universal Kids.

PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH.

SEEKING: Experienced, fun, bubbly, energetic, likeable TELEVISION HOST (21+, all genders, any ethnicity) with comedic and/or improv experience who can lead the flow of the show.

The host is a big kid at heart – think friend/mentor/favorite camp counselor – with an interest in building, design and solving puzzles + strong desire and ease working with kids 6-14 and their families. A passion for escape rooms is a plus.

SHOW BRIEF: In Create the Escape, 3 kids design and build an escape room from scratch in each episode with the help of a Host and 2 Design Experts who assist the kids in transforming their ideas into reality. The only limit is their imaginations. In a fun twist, their family members, teachers, or guest celebrities will try to escape the room when it’s finished. Create the Escape empowers kids to bring their ideas to life – they are the creators and the visionaries!

*** NOTE: Talent should understand they will be working directly with children ages 6-14 and must be bondable for such work (i.e. pass a background check for working with minors).

*** Qualified applicants with criminal histories will be considered for employment in a manner consistent with the requirements of law, including the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring or the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, where applicable.

Dana Perino's six tips for successful Fox News interviews... for Democrats

I did that thing so many experts recommend: I went on vacation for 3 weeks and unplugged to recharge.

The experts were right. I'm back, refreshed and refocused.

...and this post from Fox News' Dana Perino caught my eye this week.

The takeaway nuggets are universally applicable and a good reminder of basic, common-sense media-training and on-camera strategies:

Know your audience.
Know your programming.
Know your host.
Do your research.

It seems obvious but when you are media training at this level with serious talking points hoping to avoid (or stir) controversy it is easy to get stuck in the automated response zone and forget to be present, to talk TO not at and meet your audience where they are.

Oh, and keep a sense of humor.

If you want to be seen and heard and to have a chance to persuade engaged news consumers, you need to be on Fox News.
