is a particularly important issue for activists, independent musicians, and anyone who's challenging the status quo. If you live in a Red State, you really need to make that call to your Congressional Reps to get them to urge the FCC to back off this insidious effort.

Call: 202-759-7766 and Battle for the Net will connect you to your reps.

So proud of Liza Jessie Peterson. Her "Peculiar Patriot" is set for its National Black Theatre run later this month. Here's what it's about:

"The Peculiar Patriot examines the human impact and inhuman machinery of the prison industrial complex and shines a glaring light on the racial disparities that feed the draconian system. It follows Betsy LaQuanda Ross, a self-proclaimed “peculiar patriot,” who makes regular visits to penitentiaries boosting the morale of her incarcerated friends and family. Betsy is both victim and victor of this country’s prison system and represents the millions of men and women who sojourn to penitentiaries on a regular basis, subjecting themselves to long bus rides and security checks to visit incarcerated loved ones. As this witty love story unfolds, The Peculiar Patriot gives voice to the voiceless and shines a glaring light on America’s fastest growing industry while enchanting audiences with provocative thought, hilarious dialogue, and gripping pathos.

Much more than a coming-of-age story, Amman Abbasi's "Dayveon" is a transfixing piece of storytelling. It opens in NY & LA this Wednesday, September 13. Read Curtis John's review here:

On the impending death of Soundcloud.

"But the lesson to take away from the SoundCloud crisis isn’t just that creative businesses are difficult to sustain online, or that the company wasn’t quick enough to find a lasting revenue stream. It’s that as we move creative scenes from cities and neighborhoods and onto the web, we outsource the publishing, storage, and archiving of their products to young, for-profit businesses — and therefore run the very serious risk of losing huge and important libraries of culture to the vagaries of a new and quickly moving economy. Thinking about SoundCloud it’s hard not to be reminded of Vine, the hugely influential video-sharing app that was unceremoniously shut down by Twitter last year: Not only did the web lose one of its most vibrant spaces, any videos that disappeared from the service were gone forever. It’s not an accident, either, that, like Vine, SoundCloud’s culture is primarily steered by non-white contributors."

The site is reportedly closer to running out of funds than many expected.

The supremely talented Arthur Jafa has his moment:

"In short, Jafa, 56, is the prime example of someone whose work you probably know even if you don’t know his name. It’s possible that may change this month, with Jafa’s first UK solo exhibition at London’s Serpentine Sackler Gallery. Titled A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions, its mix of photography, film and social media elements mean that it’s likely to court visitors beyond the usual art crowd." You may not know the name, but you’ll recognise his work with Beyoncé. Now, thanks to a new London show, his ‘radical’ art is getting the exposure it deserves

"Ms. Gund, together with the Ford Foundation, which will administer the fund, has asked other collectors to do the same, in the hopes of raising an additional $100 million over the next five years.

The effort is noteworthy, not only for the amount of money involved — rarely do charitable undertakings start at $100 million — but because Ms. Gund is essentially challenging fellow collectors to use their artworks to champion social causes at a time when the market has made their holdings more valuable than ever."

Ms. Gund has asked other collectors to help champion her social cause, which she has seeded with $100 million of the proceeds from the sale.

Darius Clark Monroe's "Evolution a Criminal," my favorite doc of 2014 that we also covered on Bold As Love last summer, makes its long-anticipated public television debut tonight on PBS's Independent Lens (details for your station below). Emotionally-striking and brave beyond measure, words I never use lightly, "Evolution" is a much-watch film from one of America's most talented filmmakers.

Greetings, Bold As Lovers.

The Harlem Film Festival is rolling out this week from Wednesday September 10 through Sunday September 14. There are around 90 films being shown. If that's not enough there is a reading of scenes from the screenplays of the five finalists in the Screenplay Competition, which includes one by yours truly, The Blacktivist, written with Bill Abelson. It's a coming-of-age comedy and love story set against the backdrop of the early days of the anti-apartheid and divestment movements that swept college campuses in the late '70s and early 80s.
